The last time I made it into the stadium/arena in time for the national anthem was an NFL game in AZ in 2014. This was pre Kaepernick. I had my mind made up that there was no way in hell that I was going to stand during the “land of the free/home of the brave” ending of the song. So, I sat my ass down.
A middle aged lady sitting behind me noticed, tapped me on the shoulder and asked why I sat. “My BiL has been in prison for 20 years for a crime he didn’t commit, and we have the highest incarceration rate in the world. I will not stand or sing “land of the free” when it’s a lie.” End of conversation. I think that’s about the least confrontational that the scenario could have played out.
Her face was a mix of consternation and low-grade shock. I don’t think it had crossed many people’s minds at that time that not standing was an option.
I present physically/visually as a tall, clean-cut, white dude and get mistaken for military or ex-military all the time(short hair, rigid posture) so there must have been some internal dissonance going for her that I wasn’t a “rah rah 'Merica!” type of person.
I hate these facebook posts so much. Cmon ease up and enjoy this taco picture and stop getting so triggered by trumps facist takeover you’re ruining everything. How about no fuck you?
hey hey what part of taco time don’t you understand? this is a guys whos feed is primarily a food blog and videos of him and his wife working out and their nice normal life so stop trying to ruin it with your politics. this was his last political post. he is a political independent who thinks for himself unlike those other people.
I think for people like this, you have to make politics personal. And by that I mean, stop talking about the fighting, and try to talk about how politics affects their life, from who they choose for city council all the way up to president. Forget “all politics is local,” and start thinking “all politics is personal.”
The few derps I know on Facebook haven’t posted anything political in close to a week. I really thought Kamala being named VP would bring them out of their caves with birther theories and other bits of racism but I don’t see it there.
I stand by my view that most of the Trump base is very disillusioned by the state of things. At best they vote Trump out of hatred for Democrats. The only groups that really appear to stand with him now are the ultra-racist and The Villages-type of people.
Pretty good chance, imo, that this person will manage to find a reason to pull the lever for Dump in November. Thankfully since they’re in CA (right?) their vote won’t matter.
