Dealing with Deplorable Family and Friends

False dichotomy. Stopping women have sex is about morality and control.

We have been drifting on the no kids thing. Her family put a lot of pressure on her to have them. She isnt really sure and im pretty neutral.

I dont want to have kids in next year or two, and i so unless that changes i will probably just time out.

If ever i go back to the philippines that might change. Raising kids with the option of a full time nanny for 300 bucks a month, plus large extended family support plus lots of friends with kids… the story changes a bit.

Raising a kid as a an isolated couple in an expensive major city… ugh.

What you’re saying is that their opposition to abortion merely naturally entails controlling women’s bodies, rather than that being the goal. Firstly, I have my doubts and secondly, who cares?

Think some of the abortion stuff comes from the racists thinking its causing white genocide.

Wonder what percentage of white evangelicals would be ok with it for POC but not whites if that was an option.

Obviously there’s a big difference, but religion is about morality and control for and of both males and females.

That morality is merely the means of control

well, I agree with the statement that we definitely don’t want to work as hard but that’s because we’re a lot smarter than they all were about that and the part where many of them actually got benefits in the end that we all realize we probably won’t.

someone very close to me posted that they have a “soft spot in their heart for the groypers”

My brother-in-law’s aunt is camped out in a fucking parking lot to see Trump tomorrow. This is someone I’ve known for almost 10 years and had a normal conversation with two weeks ago at a family gathering.

This timeline where these people worship President racist gameshow host is way too bizarre for me.

In our weekly chat, my mother decided to air her political grievances. It took up a solid half the call. I just listened because I kind of wanted to hear what was going on in her head.

What was weird was that the things she was complaining about were similar to some things we had complained about in the past. She’s aware of what the problems are and pointed out the incompetence of the government in more general terms. She didn’t defend Trump or really comment positively on him in any way. She didn’t go off on alt-right conspiracy theories or shit like that. She also barely criticized the Democrats.

The thing is that she doesn’t have the nuance to really provide anything more detailed than surface area knowledge. Since we here don’t really discuss politics with anybody but each other, we don’t see how little the vast majority of people think about this stuff. They see the news and go, “Okay, that’s what’s happening.” and move on with their lives. If she had the knowledge to think deeper, she might have some deeper connections and through that might see what this is about.

But I think what’s really done it and why she didn’t go off spouting out GOP talking points is the stock market. Despite common sense saying otherwise, my mother has almost none of her savings in bonds. So when the stock market took a dive, it took away nearly 50% of the profits she gained since investing. Based on that short discussion, it probably won’t be enough to get her to vote Democrat but the fact is that deplorables may be coming less deplorable and less supportive of Trump because of a tanking stock market. As a side note, it does suck to see this happen to my mother. But I know that her assets will recover.

My mother isn’t going to change because she’s voted Republican since Reagan’s first term. But from a relationship perspective, I do feel slightly comfortable with interacting with my mother about these things.

One thing that progressives absolutely suck at is pointing out the huge amount of value that the government has created for people and that they rely on every day. If eDems could think more outside the box, they should stop conceding to the Republican rhetoric around government waste and low taxes and spend a bunch of their money on a mass marketing campaign improve the brand of the Federal government. Look at how successful Bloomberg’s money has been in inserting himself, totally undeservedly, into the Democratic race. If people like him and Steyer spent their money on ads pointing out all the good things the government does and that the Republicans are trying to take away it would add more value.

People who couldn’t swim were pushed into the water hundreds of yards offshore in 60 degree water at 4:30AM and they were screaming for help from drowning and my own fucking mother’s takeaway from all this is “illegals were sneaking in via boat”. pathetic.

Harsh.

“Mom, I don’t call people illegals and I wish all these people trying to get here, with or without permission, the best of luck. I hope all these people were rescued successfully.”

I’m surprised that she conceded at the end. At least to you. You know she is like -10000 to use “illegals” multiple times at that dinner/birthday. Nevertheless, keep fighting the good fight. Every bit helps.

My parents were here the other week and we ended up having [another] huge blowout. The first morning she’s eating breakfast with my daughter when she pulls one of her classic moves - “I just have to say xxx and that’s it” - which turned out to be accusing my wife and I of feeding my daughter only processed crap (in response to me asking if she wants some goldfish). I did not react well to this and eventually started screaming at them kicking them out of my house. Turns out what my mom was actually upset about was that she felt I have been cold towards them/depressed since they support Trump (I mean she’s probably not totally wrong about this but it’s certainly not something I do consciously). Eventually we worked it out and had a decent visit - including a reasonable political discussion! - but man these people are just obsessed with their persecution complex.

Re: kids, my wife and I have always wanted them and I don’t think I ever really considered not having any, buuut now that we have one I’m ok stopping there. My daughter is the love of my life but raising her is enough work for two people and at every challenging stage I feel relief at the though of never having to go through it again. I think my wife would like to have another baby and I guess it might lead to some friction, especially because ALL of our friends are likely going to have multiple children, but they all seem stressed to death whereas we’re grooving along pretty well as a family of three.

Yeah not sure I’m allowed to say this as I’m in my 40s and childfree but if you’re going to have at least one kid just stop at one. Multiple kids seems like total hell and is not what the planet needs anyways.
