A meta-post about the HCA subreddit that seems very relevant to the discussion here.

I would love for this sub not to exist. To cease to exist. Which would herald the end of the pandemic and the return to our lives. But we are not going to get that any time soon, because of all the people being eulogized on this sub. I am pissed off at every last one of these people. In June when the guidance changed to “No mask for vaxed, un-vaxed please keep wearing the mask” I could have TOLD you what was going to happen, as could anyone paying a lick of attention. The anti-mask people and the anti-vax people are the same goddamn people and now the pandemic is RIGHT back up to thousands of daily deaths and it did NOT have to BE this way.
Journalists who want a hot take: I know how these award winners feel about me. I voted for Obama, Clinton, and Biden. I live in a large coastal city with my Latino immigrant gay-married husband and neither of us has been to church in 30 years. I know they hate me and everything about me. They tell me every single day, repeatedly. I’m not cheering these deaths. But neither am I shedding any tears. And it’s really hard not to fall into the mindset of thinking the world gets a little better with every one of them that croaks. How is the world not better off with one less hateful, bigoted, homophobic racist spewing their bile at everyone all the goddamn time?

I would add that this sub is filling a void that, in a healthy media landscape, would be filled by daily front-page stories documenting how specific individuals’ consumption of disinformation killed them–and how their dissemination of it killed others. There are very rare instances in which politeness and decorum no longer are a good in themselves, but rather a harmful acquiescence to forces that endanger a society’s survival. This is one of those times.

“Rooting” or “cheering” for others misfortune including death is like rooting and cheering for a game on TV. It does nothing. It’s for my own entertainment. I can’t say these things in polite society and I need to let my id out for my own mental health.

The debate seems to be about where to draw the line. DJTjr drops dead tomorrow, close to 100% celebrate itt. Major covidiots deaths seem to garner well over 50%. Covid Mom that believes some bad info but doesn’t actively spread probably much less than 50%. Maybe there are a few purists on either end? I endeavor to draw my line to post at active disinformation spreaders but confess to not spending a lot of effort researching each case in detail.

Everyone has their own line. I respect that some find the whole topic distasteful. I’d suggest staying out of the thread if needed for their own sanity. But if anyone wants to post criticism, I’m a big boy and can take it.

This whole subject came into this thread after feedback in the main Covid thread. If we have to do something we could split it into truly terrible people in one thread and covidiot schadenfreude in another.

I legitimately am sorry that you have to deal with the fallout created by the abysmally poor choices of those who seek out COVID and die from it. I know it must be painful to watch them die, and see the collateral damage to those that cared about them. I wish you did not have to experience that.
But here comes the but, unfortunately.
You took an oath to sew the severed dicks back on to rapists, and to heal mass murdering terrorists. And I’m glad you did. But I didn’t.
I didn’t take an oath to heal the deranged sociopaths that are doing their damndest to murder my parents. I didn’t sign up to nurse back to health those that have guaranteed that a significant portion of my lifetime will be spent profoundly disrupted.
I know you find celebrating the end of these lives to be distasteful, and maybe I wish I was a better person who instead of mocking them was healing them. But I’m not. I’m just some moron on the Internet, and these assholes can get fucked forever.

It’s not just this. Ikes finds this stuff deeply offensive. It troubles him to even read it. Despite the personal distress it causes him he will fearlessly click on the thread and read each post so that he can tell us that it is so wrong. He does this in the hope that the community will better itself. He is sacrificing his own mental well-being, so that we might all benefit.

Utter bullshit. Thread is littered with people simply defending their actions. It’s fine though, write whatever history you want. I’m sure the people celebrating the deaths of anyone unvaccinated are the righteous ones. This is how this all started, and it’s important:

The other day the front page of the local paper was a letter from a rural police chief saying that he has never seen the level of vitriol aimed at other people/officers as by antimaskers/antivaxx people. He said they are worse than any criminals he’s ever dealt with in terms of behavior.
Well I was genuinely concerned about the sentence you wrote regarding your humanity in face of the pandemic. I thought it’s a real issue and might cause your ridiculous posting here and we as a community should attempt to help.
Keep in mind I know very little about you unlike others who saw through it. I guess it’s just because I’m a much better person than you are. But again, I didn’t know it at the time.

Oh my humanity in the pandemic is absolutely a real fucking issue I struggle with daily. It’s just not affected by reading this thread. It’s more the 34 year old father who died. Or maybe the old lady who left after 5 hours waiting for a bed after I gave her a cancer diagnosis. Or one of hundreds of people who have told me that it’s ok that [insert awful thing here] in the ER is happening to them because they know I’m trying my best. Idk anymore

Everyone accepts that ikes has a point (a really good one). It’s also been made many, many times. Everyone has more or less decided how much grave dancing they’re going to do, and the repeated reminders won’t change that.
The way this thread works is as follows:
- People dance on graves
- Ikes tells them it’s gross
- People say, “Well you’re not wrong, but…”
- Shots get fired in all directions
That’s just how it goes here. Everyone (ikes included) can participate or not participate, but no one should be complaining about it when the rules are so well established.
