Crazy Religious Shit

While it is fucked up, getting that kid out of that school has to be a net positive thing in her life. Honestly, it’s the best thing that could have happened. I’m 100% serious.

I guess this is the appropriate thread to discuss today’s stabbing/assassination attempt on author Salman Rushdie? He wrote a book in 1988 that portrayed Muhammed in a bad light, a fatwah was put on him including a $3mil bounty. Today he gets attacked by a 24 year old who was 10 years away from even being born when the book came out. Religion is so fucking stupid.

Fuck religion so hard. Imagine caring about some book you didn’t like written 30 years ago before you were born cause your stupid book written 2000 years ago told you to!

you are right of course, sans it’s only 1400 years for the book.

Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe?

good point.

The real tragedy is that Rushdie’s fatwa controversy got many people to read his terrible books. There I said it.

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan, with even unproven allegations provoking mob lynchings and violence.

Salman Taseer, a governor of Punjab, was killed by his security guard in Pakistan’s capital in Islamabad, in 2011. Taseer had called for reforms to the blasphemy legislation and promised to help Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who was accused for blasphemy after an argument with a Muslim woman.

The Asia Bibi episode unleashed a wave of bigotry that has swept over society to the point that, today, one of [Pakistan’s] biggest parties in terms of votes polled is a party founded on a single point agenda of having blasphemy laws ferociously enforced. In this environment, few activists or writers dare to speak even in the narrowest and most cautious of ways,” said Almeida.

This is basically the Republicans where blasphemy is any anti Trump talk, anti market talk, anti cop talk, CRT or trans rights, etc.

it seems to me really idiotic that christians talk constantly of being “saved” and how wonderful it is.

my first question would be, saved from what? the bog standard line is “sin,” but I like sin and stuff that’s traditionally considered sinful isn’t really harming me or anyone i love, and even if it did, if i make this magical prayer, you’re telling me it won’t hurt me anymore?

well, no, it still probably will, in fact, biblically, you’re guaranteed to suffer, not only that, you’ll probably suffer worse because that’s an omnipotent and omniscient being’s way of testing those he already knows are most faithful to him.

so what am i being saved from really? eternal damnation. ok, so who created that? god did. ok. this is sounding like a scam now. i need to be saved from something by someone who created the thing i need saving from? my god, that’s deranged.

and yet, pretty much everyone i ever cared about in my life tells me this makes complete sense and im dumb for not understanding it.

in my view, if the bible’s literally true, I cannot wait to stand at the doors of hell, where god expects an apology or whatever, and then give a middle finger if i consciously can. sure, he could make me kneel or whatever, but he’ll know i didnt mean it, and my last conscious act would definitely be to give him the middle finger.

by any literal interpretation of the bible, god’s a murderous, genocidal asshole that’s multiple std deviations worse than hitler, if such a thing could even be measured. it’s thus even more absurd to me that he’s often described as all-loving. the old testament god did not a fuck at all and i really doubt truly loved anyone other than himself, and new testament jesus is kind of a jerk sometimes too tbh, theologically I could totally get behind jesus’ vibe but he says he’s literally the old testament god throughout the new testament so fuck that man. fuck you. sometimes i kinda hope it’s real so there’s someone to blame for how fucked the world is, you know?

it isn’t real though, and the really infuriating thing is huge important parts of our lives are decided by oodles of people that believe this so hard theyre willing and eager to die for it.

enough to make someone insane if you really think about it too hard.

A life of sin may feel good at the time, but it tortures your soul. And a tortured soul goes on forever in agony. You get damned to hell with burning oil and eternal pain for your lecherous lifestyle. Who wouldn’t want to be saved from such a fate!

Part of being saved is when Armageddon comes and Jesus returns to save his flock (those who believe without seeing) and they float up to heaven. While everyone else burns and a bunch of horsemen fly around maiming people. Jesus Saves!

boring, with all due respect

To some extent or another, everyone since the first man has offered their opinion.

That’s why there’s no gratification

And Channing Tatum becomes Danny McBride’s gimp.

these are the big topics, and it would be fun to discuss them without mocking. if I came across adversarial, it’s just where my fascination took me.

it’s interesting that the sentiment of some of the lessons taught, they’re as incomprehensible today as they were the day he said them.
