COVID-19: Chapter 9 - OMGicron

Yeah this could be a big factor.

Way to fish for pity.

jeff foxworthy nailed it though. i know itā€™s popular to think heā€™s not funny, but the dude worked his butt off and it showed.

Foxworthy nailed a tone where he was ostensibly ā€œmaking fun of red necksā€, but actually it was a big red neck culture circle jerk with the audience.

I used to do amateur standup back in the mid-90s with a guy named James Johann who wound up moderately successful as an opening act on the redneck comedy circuit. His act was nothing like that when he was starting out though. He was just like the rest of us - raunchy, edgy. Really good though, and he was only 19.

I bumped into him in like 2010 at a comedy show at a bar that was just a big free for all of comedians doing comedy for each other. He was like no way Iā€™m doing my act for these comedians, it will die.

It was kind of an interesting ā€œthis could have been your lifeā€ moment.

All things being equal Iā€™m pretty sure Iā€™d rather be a computer programmer than have found a niche and be stuck on the redneck comedy circuit for life. But Iā€™d obviously rather be the next George Carlin than a computer programmer.

Would I rather be a medium successful comedy writer in LA? I dunno. That seems like a brutal profession. I donā€™t think you get that satisfying flow state like in programming.

Michael Richards is the one who nailed right-wing comedy.

You add a vaccine to the mix, your chances of dying from COVID drastic go down!

Jeff Foxworthy was all kayfabe. Upper-middle class, college-educated guy pretending to be a down-home redneck. Much beloved by other upper-middle class guys pretending to be salt-of-the-earth country dudes. Thereā€™s a huge appetite for that kind of thing, look at Kid Rock or those Duck Dynasty guys or whatever.

Finally had my first shot. Pfizer.

Australia has been way behind the pace. Until recently they were only allowing 40 and over. Then then opened it up to everyoneā€¦ as a 39 year old it kind of sucked. The oldest group without priority.

I was booked for late October, but been checking the system for availability and got a slot with 2 hours notice. Going back with mrs rugby later for hers.

Another guy who somehow nailed it is Ron White. The Foxworthy crowd seems to love him as well. He doesnā€™t seem particularly conservative, but they embrace him as one of their own.

I actually like him too. His stuff is pretty good, imo.

Have we talked at all about what has been going on at Conn College? For background, the college has a mandatory vaccination policy unless you have an exemption, meaning that staff and students are 98-99% fully vaccinated. They had an outbreak of breakthrough infections, which they only knew about because they test students biweekly. At 69 cases they instituted these rules, among others:

  • No in-person classes or club/organisation meetings
  • No athletic practices, athletic facilities closed
  • No visiting other studentsā€™ rooms
  • No leaving campus without permission of class dean
  • Socializing with a maximum of three students, outdoors

The outbreak later grew to 170 cases. Hospitalizations: zero.

This all strikes me as completely out to lunch (which ironically is another thing youā€™re not allowed to do). The virus is going to be endemic. Whatā€™s the endgame here? We hope that mRNA vaccines tailored for Delta are strong enough for herd immunity, which might never even happen? Youā€™re going to keep shutting the college down until then? Annual fee there is $77,575, by the way.

Sounds like they executed a plan nicely, and I donā€™t see your criticism as even slightly valid. The argument of ā€œitā€™s going to be endemic, therefore aggressive containment procedures canā€™t be doneā€ is nonsense that we see from republicans who donā€™t care about the virus spreading

I thought Ikioi was the last regular UPer to get jabbed - Oz have managed to (mostly) keep a lid on things but man your vaccination stuff has been pretty woeful. Glad youā€™ve finally got one in the arm :+1:
