COVID-19: Chapter 9 - OMGicron

Pretty much a lot of projecting going on in this whole thing.

I agree that position of power is a little much.

I will say that, without knowing the specifics of this case, there is A LOT of anti-black racism in the service industry in NYC. I am sure itā€™s the case elsewhere as well, I know it is in Toronto. But in any event there is a very prominent trope that black people are terrible tippers and therefore servers/hostesses/etc. are often rude to them. I very much agree with @DrChesspain that people shouldnā€™t project their assumptions about NYC liberalism onto these situations. Itā€™s actually totally standard for black customers to get treated like shit in NYC restaurants, and certainly in the Upper West Side which is especially full of snobby white people.

I guess you socialized with a lot of agitated Italians during your time in NYC to have such a strong opinion on this?

My strong opinion is repeatedly laughing at the idea that this person has a position of authority. The Italian comment is your bias and experience all you want. My experience has been very different.

P. S. Bayes theorem is chuckling at you.

gmafb. Can you show me your calculations with completely made up probabilities? Person on internet alluding to Bayes is wrong 93.2% of the time. Especially when we have a long list of stories of service workers getting abused for enforcing basic mask and vaccine mandates.

Weā€™ll see about what ends up being true, but declaring certainty anywhere is just obnoxious

I wouldnā€™t say Iā€™m back to normal, but Iā€™ve certainly been less cautious recently than the median UPer.

My state is still near the bottom for cases even though we are at an all time high right now. Hospitalizations and ICUs are still well off the February highs. Iā€™m vaccinated and so are seven-eighths of the over-12s. I donā€™t have kids and arenā€™t in contact with them.

I think ikes and chesspain are makng too much of this ā€œauthorityā€ thing. She is in a position of relative authority over the customer. But in an absolute sense, she has very little authority (assuming she is just an employee serving as the hostess). Both characterizations are reasonable depending on the point one is trying to make.

It also speaks to the racial dynamics. If the customers were 3 rich white Upper West Side ladies then no one would even try to argue that the server is in a position of power.

This new season of Serial is terrible.

The 65+ thing is so low because a lot of people that age who got it died. A bunch of others prob thought it was the flu

Donā€™t get the plane though

The plane is a survivorship bias meme.

Got it

I havenā€™t seen the plane used as a meme but Iā€™ve seen the image and underlying story before. Took me about 20 seconds to recover the meaning from my brainā€™s long term storage memory banks.

Edit: Also of course that isnā€™t the actual explanation for the numbers (COVIDā€™s IFR is way too low, even in 65+) but itā€™s amusing all the same.

Iā€™m waiting until the kids get vaccinated but idk if Iā€™m going to wait that long to resume some indoor activities besides work. With delta those case levels might be unachievable.

Alberta government released our vaccine passport todayā€¦
