Keed, I’m sitting in a restaurant wearing a mask right now. The guidance from my state is to only take it off to eat, which I’m doing. My personal comfort level is to only go just after it opens when it’s not crowded, which will prob go away now that I’m vaxxed. It’s not about eliminating risk, it’s about reducing risk, especially with something as easy to comply with as a mask.
Don’t forget that some can’t get the vaccine due to underlying issues (IIRC even pregnancy). That’s why mask-wearing is a courtesy to others. (Though an unvaccinated pregnant woman probably shouldn’t be eating indoors at a restaurant, but still–maybe one of the servers is.)
Do you agree that they are necessary for unvaxxed people? (Hint: they are). Ok, great. So now let’s put ourselves in the shoes of a restaurant employee, or a kid, or someone who isn’t able to get vaccinated. Do they have any way of knowing that you are vaxxed and don’t pose a threat to them? No, they don’t. So be courteous and wear a fucking mask for the small amount of time you share a breathing space with strangers. It’s not hard.
Or you could just say you’re ok with unvaxxed, infected, anti-mask assholes spreading the virus. Because you are actively giving those people cover to do so.
This is close to where i fall, Id just also add that we are at peak infections worldwide, have close to unfettered travel, we can see examples of places being overrun and putting in restrictions despite fairly high vaccination levels (albeit not with Pfizer and Moderna), and we arent using a vaccine passport system (Israel for example) to enter restaurants, theatres, etc. So Id just argue for a lot of caution at ending mask mandates given the relatively low cost of wearing a mask in most settings.
I dont think if Keed doesnt wear a mask he’s a horrible person or doing anything super dangerous, and I agree that in the long-run masks shouldnt be a political statement, but just seems like sort of a societal own goal to be in a rush to get rid of the least intrusive NPI at this stage of the pandemic.
Yes, yes, we all envy you for having spent the pandemic in a coma rather than enduring the upheaval of our daily lives. You don’t have to keep rubbing our faces in it. It turns out that your proposed attitude towards masks in public, while reasonable, is extremely political.
One guy said “I know this. Doesn’t mean I will.” Which is pretty well representative of the ones I talked to.
Not that I was surprised. These are the people who were calling Covid a hoax while Trump was doing press conferences saying it was going to kill 2.2 million people if not for him.
Just want to share that my county of about 38,000 peaked at 384 vaccinations in a day in late March and now we’re open to everyone and have a stockpile of supply and have averaged 49 a day for the past week, which is about what our pace was at the beginning of January. We’re at about 25 percent of the county fully vaxxed. I’m in the red part of Illinois.
One would think the Chinese Vaccine should be more effective against the Chinese Flu. This sounds like a conspiracy! LET’S MAKE AN 85 MINUTE LONG YOUTUBE VIDEO!!!
