COVID-19: Chapter 8 - Ongoing source of viral information, and a little fun

Seems like they’d want to push the envelope a little before asking everyone to get a booster. When vaxxed people start getting more serious illness, then it would make sense. I mean, as we look down the road, do we see covid vaccines as something we’ll need once a year, or more than that? Or maybe less?

NH recently outlawed mandatory COVID vaccinations for public schools/colleges and government buildings.

People who have recently taken a Covid test are being asked to record a cough on their smartphone or computer as part of a drive to improve detection rates.

The government also wants people to provide short voice and breathing sound samples as it looks at developing an app for wider use.

For the Department of Health and Social Care’s research project, adults who have taken a Covid test in the last 72 hours can submit the barcode they have received from the NHS via their mobile, laptop, tablet or desktop computer.

They then record their breathing, coughing and a read-out sentence.

Researchers compare the test results - showing an infection or a clean bill of health - with the recordings, as they seek to refine the technology.

My wife surprised me with tickets to see Patton Oswalt well after we were vaxxed, but just before the Delta variant skyrocketed (October show). Fortunately, I just saw Oswalt say that he’s working with the venues, organizers, etc. to get systems in place to require proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test within 48 hours.

Still wary, but assuming those requirements get put in place, I’ll feel ok. Plus, I would guess the vast majority of Oswalt’s fans - especially those who would pay to see him in person - are pro-vax.

I’m really curious as to what those systems for evaluating proof of vaccination look like.

Does anyone have a trip report for a large event that required proof?

I have a TR for the Clippers playoff game that supposedly required proof to sit in my section, and literally no one anywhere asked for vaxx cards - just tickets.

A large venue where everyone shows up at roughly the same time is going to be a total shitshow. Anyone who wants to fake a card can obviously do so.

Only when you have venues getting fined and shut down the way bars do for accepting fake IDs will they actually check rigorously. Just saying you require vaxx should keep a lot of people away, at least at first until people learn how easy it is to fake, or maybe that they aren’t even checking at all, like the Clippers game.

Pitt has the same issue. It’s been known for months that they will never support mask or vaccine mandates because the repubs will just strip all of their money.

Glad to see Penn State at least explaining it

Yeah, no idea. Mike Birbiglia is doing the same and has already had a couple venues confirm they are enforcing the requirements.

As I said, I feel pretty confident that the vast majority at this show will be vaxxed. Oswalt is an outspoken liberal on Twitter, so I would guess the anti-vaxx conservatives aren’t about to go to his performance. I would assume masks will be required.

At Lollapalooza, they simply requested a photo of the vaccination record according to my friend. They didn’t even look at an ID to match names or anything. I also heard some folks brought their physical copies and were organizing passbacks.

NOLA is in rough shape right now per anecdotal reports

Harrah’s was forced to by the city. All bars, restaurants, indoor venues, etc. need it. New Orleans is in much better shape than the rest of the state, but that’s not saying much obviously.

Pfizer is trialing a Delta booster as we speak.

I’m currently in France and they’ve got a phone app (Tousanticovid) that generates a QR code on your phone after your vaccination information has been entered into the country’s medical system (happens automatically at vaccination, I think). Just about everything except grocery stores requires the QR code (or neg test result), even sitting outdoors at a restaurant, and it seems very efficient to me–someone scans the QR code, gets a green checkmark, and in you go. Obviously something like this would never fly in the US, sadly, but it would solve a lot of these venue verification issues.

Freedom means leaving the information collection and verification up to thousands of random businesses and apps, dammit.

Vaccinated are much less likely to be tested.

Is there any evidence/consensus that cases are being undercounted more now than in previous waves?

Yes, you have vaccinated less likely to get tested, but I think pretty much everybody is less likely. Not only due to covid fatigue, but a lot of testing locations closed down. My neighborhood had one - walking distance away - that shut down shortly before Delta started rising. Good chance a lot of folks who would’ve headed there decide not to make the effort to go elsewhere.

Right - because vaccines work.
