Thanks for the citation. This study responsibly generates their cohorts by picking matched triples, i.e., one person only gets considered as part of the Pfizer portion of the study if there are two more people like that person w.r.t. sex, age, race, state of residence and a couple more factors where one each has Moderna and nothing. My hypothesis for why we’re seeing a big difference between Pfizer and Moderna in this study in the July time frame is a small sample size (38 and 15 positives, respectively, out of about 21k people each). Maybe there’s something there, but we need a lot more data.
The vaccinated people were much older on average than the unvaccinated population.
I don’t follow the thread and this probably talked about here, but Israel started giving 3rd pfizer vax. My parents both got it and it seems like very high response from the 60+ population. 50+ starting this week.
My sister was positive for delta and symptomatic. Obviously she’s vaxxed. Had flu-like symptoms and quarantined for whatever the period is, not sure exactly. Husband and kids didn’t catch it. She’s recovered since.
UK starting boosters in 2-3 weeks, administering at the same time as the flu vaccine… one in each arm, I guess. Over 50’s and anyone under 50yrs eligible for the flu jab will get a booster.
In other news…
US drug regulators have given to go-ahead for immunocompromised Americans to get an additional Covid jab as a booster to help stave off infection and illness.
The order, issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects around 10 million people, including transplant recipients and cancer patients.
It’s the first time US health officials have indicated that booster shots may be necessary to fight Covid.
It comes as evidence grows that antibody protection from vaccines may wear off over time, and as some people seek their third dose on the black market.
Israel and Chile have already given out booster shots to certain groups of people.
Countries planning a booster rollout include the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea.
But the World Health Organization has called for a moratorium on booster shots until at least the end of September to allow every country to vaccinate at least 10% of their population.
This interpretation is incorrect. Controls matter ffs.
Packaging the covid booster with a flu shot seems like a great idea. There are probably a ton of people (like me, ugh) who got covid shots asap but have never gotten a flu shot. Seems like a great way to increase flu shots.
Need more people losing their jobs over being unvaxxed:
The “funding relies on strong bipartisan support”, so fuck the left.
“Bipartisan” is code for “Rs and Ds work together to advance the interests of corporations”.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to wait for booster shots until they get updated to better protect against newer variants? I assume this is something all the pharmas have been earnestly working on and the leap from current vaccine to v1.2 is much easier than no vaccine to v1.0.
Is this reasonable or am I clueless? ¿por que no los dos?
I suspect this is part of the reason the CDC isn’t yet recommending everyone go out and get a booster.
I think another dynamic is that vaxx hesitancy remains Problem #1, so it would be a public policy mistake to come out and say “vaxxed people should wait until a new vax is available before getting boosters”. The anti vaxxer crowd will jump all over this to amplify their bullshit. SEE WE TOLD YOU THE OLD VAXX WAS NO GOOD! NOW THEY’RE SAYING YOU SHOULDNT EVEN GET IT! ITS UNTESTED! WHAT ARE YOU HIDING! TEACH THE CONTROVERSY! DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!
Did Costco bring back its mask mandate? I was just in a Costco in a red state with lots of covid and everyone was masked besides one small child.
Those laws aren’t that bad.
Are there even any updated vaccines in trials yet? Pfizer is supposedly working on one, but I haven’t heard that trials have even started. Seems like we should have a sense of urgency here.
Hark! Harold the angel sings, glory to the newborn King.
again apologies if this was posted already, but hopefully this becomes the norm everywhere:
Vaccine fatigue is another factor. Ideally, everyone would get every booster that comes along, but in the real world if the CDC yells at everyone to go out the delta booster it’s going to be that much harder to get them to go get subsequent boosters, which might be more critical.
This is outside of my expertise, but it’s not unreasonable to think that a shot now (of a vaccine that is highly effective against all variants studied) is better than a shot later that may be a little more effective. This may be more pronounced in the immunocompromised compared with people who aren’t (the former may need the boost while the latter have much less to gain from a 3rd iteration of the same shot).
Pfizer is working on a delta variant vaccine, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are boosters with it towards the end of the year.
