COVID-19: Chapter 8 - Ongoing source of viral information, and a little fun

Cases no - but the vaccinated are more likely to have mild or asymptomatic cases, and therefore not get tested as much. On the other end of the spectrum anyone sick enough to go to the hospital gets tested - which is going to skew heavily unvaxxed.

Testing sites are way down in Florida despite now absolutely crushing previous January records. Up 12.5% again week over week, btw.

In my county, they donā€™t even have drive thru testing. You need to go to CVS/Walgreens (limited appointments) or an urgent care and DeathSantis refuses to release data daily.

Florida had 689/100,000 people test positive the past week.

ā€œCases noā€

Vaccinated getting milder cases + Harder to get tested + Younger people getting mild covid = more uncaught cases, imo.

Sure but there were always something like 80% uncaught cases. If there are more now a big component of that is because the vaccines work and people with mild symptoms donā€™t get tested.

Not sure about younger people being a big component.

And yeah in some places itā€™s harder to get tested. But itā€™s super easy in others. Even in Missouri my buddies keep getting tested because someoneā€™s kid got exposed or something.

Judge blocks high school from enacting a mask mandate

In his ruling, Chupp wrote the people being forced to wear a mask ā€œface irreparable harm, including significant and irreparable damage to their right to a healthful environment while they receive a free and appropriate public education.ā€

Chupp also questioned the efficacy of face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

ā€œIf your argument really is that masks work, and they may or may not, I guess they do. And if Iā€™m wearing a mask, why am I worried about somebody else wearing a mask if my mask works?ā€ Chupp asked during the hearing.

In reality the only thing that matters is the governor said schools canā€™t mandate masks so schools canā€™t mandate masks, the rest is just hot air

But I feel like the evidence for masks is probably much more concrete than the evidence that a mask mandate is irreparably harmful to a kids healthful environment. I actually had to read the quote twice to realize the judge was talking about the mask mandate harming kids and not the lack of one

In Florida, under 12 years old has been ~7% of covid cases, but last week was ~11%. I think that this would would suggest that either Delta is making children/people sicker, or that we are missing more cases now than we were before since a higher share of younger people are making up the infected.

Itā€™s cool that they have a judge who is also a scientist and wisely knows that masks harm kids and donā€™t stop viruses.

Problem is that the catchment area for Ochsner/Tulane/UMC is super broad and the redneck hospitals are super small. I know for a fact that residencies in specialties that donā€™t care for covid are being pulled from their normal programs to do stuff like wipe covid patientā€™s asses at Ochsner. You only do that when things are in bad shape.

I donā€™t think either of those things is the biggest effect. I think the bigger thing is that kids under 12 are 100% unvaccinated, while people 13+ are vaccinated at a substantial rate.

It isnā€™t really even designed for rigorous checks, it is just designed to nudge the ambivalent into getting a vaccine. The NY app being a photo storage app and kids being allowed unvaxxed into venues sort of tells you that, for now, they donā€™t really care if a small percentage fake cards or checks arenā€™t rigorous. Particularly in jurdistictions still masking. Going to a real rigorous system needs an actual verification system and support for the venues checking for vax status.

I suspect the nudging might work at first, but then diminish to zero as people learn they can easily fake it.

How much would it cost some super billionaire to fund development of a halfway decent app?

I mean it is doable, I would hope there is one Federal database they could query. If it is state by state it is a headache, but canā€™t imagine it is super hard if resourced properly and with a transition period for people to get verified and work out kinks.

The problem is since we havenā€™t done any of this anything broad and national is months away.

There are clearly too many states. Please eliminate three. I am not a crackpot.
