COVID-19: Chapter 8 - Ongoing source of viral information, and a little fun

20% IFR burns itself out quickly. I’ll go for that one.

At least we now know the answer to “would you jump off a bridge…” is an emphatic hell yes.

WFT’s defensive coordinator is a pretty vocal MAGAturd. Probably had at least some influence on the defensive half of the team not getting their shots.

We’re at 56.5% of the population with at least one shot now. We should make it to 60% by September 1.

Someone please tell these fucking idiots what HIPPA is

My friend in Vegas got 2 shots of 2 different vaccines. Is he super protected or going to be a superhero/villain?

Man there might not be a more common typo on the internet right now

The state of NSW in australia seems to be insistant on turning COVID from an occasional outbreak into a full blown national pandemic.

Even NOW. They are resisting harder lockdowns and further initiatives. Real risk that this gets out of control, which after 18 months of success, would be beyond disheartening.

This great quote from a health official in Aus needs to be the global message.

“Eventually, everyone is either going to get infected or they’re going to get vaccinated. And that’s really the thing that we need to communicate to everyone.”

I would expect that it would take a pretty big sample size to robustly distinguish the amount of protection these people get from the average protection from a double of Pfizer or Moderna. I might have been more skeptical of this, but the random ass UK work with mixing vaccines seems to be working OK. He should be fine.

This is from the NT chief minister (very roughly equivelant of a governor).

I’m sure when these coaches quit in protest we’ll hear all sports yambags complain about how they’re “injecting politics into sports” or “why don’t they shut up and just do sports, they get paid piles of money to coach a kids’ game for a living” like we hear when black athletes take a knee.

This (1,200-5,300) is a weird range to me. We’ve been running at about 250 deaths/day for the last couple of weeks, which translates to 1,750 per week. That seems like an absolute minimum of what we can expect for the week ending August 14, since cases have been going up pretty rapidly.

I hope I’m proven wrong, but I think a more realistic estimate for the week ending August 14 is 5,300-7,000 (cumulative for the week, not average daily). That’s current daily average of positive cases multiplied by high and low recent estimated CFR. I’d be very surprised if the weekly total is under 4,000.

Hopefully I’m wrong, and increased deaths don’t actually follow the recent increase in cases. But I don’t see any evidence yet of that in the data. Gonna bookmark this post and hopefully laugh at myself in 3 weeks for being so pessimistic.
