COVID-19: Chapter 7 - Brags, Beats, and Variants

Are the anti-vaxxers still hanging around outside Dodger Stadium?

Either that, or storming malls and supermarkets without masks. Theyā€™ve got a full schedule.

In other anti-vax news, Iā€™ve learned my kidā€™s girlfriendā€™s mother is anti-vax (and somewhat anti-mask), which is a bummer.

God dammit. My grandfather (85, has diabetes, heart and kidney problems) responded to my dad asking if he was getting a vaccine with an article saying more people die from the vaccine.

Iā€™m not sure how Iā€™m going to get to him. Grandma died a few months before the pandemic and I was the one who translated all the medical information for him. Hell I was the one who convinced him to make the doctors take her off the breathing machine (she was fine initially after, had been on and off the vent for 2.5 weeks) with the plan of letting her go if she got worse. She died 2 weeks later peacefully. He trusts me.

Still though, heā€™s not dumb. Heā€™s not completely demented, and he has a fucking engineering PhD.

Problem is that my uncle is living with him who is a full deplorable. Iā€™m sure thatā€™s the source of this. That dumbass called me saying he wanted a doctors note to not wear a mask because he couldnā€™t breathe with it on. I calmly told him if his breathing was that difficult he needed to go to the ER. Heā€¦ did not appreciate that.

Itā€™s easy to lash out at people being idiots. Itā€™s harder to convince them not to be idiots, but thatā€™s what needs to be done.

Fortunately I only have to convince them on some random day for a few hours. Then they can go back to whatever nonsense they want.

No disrespect to your grandfather, but these two things are hard to match up.

How are articles like that even written? Youā€™d have to start with thinking there have been zero deaths caused by COVID. Itā€™s just pure, unadulterated bullshit yet people eat it up like gospel.

Eta: Iā€™m sorry you have to deal with this. I hope you can get through to your grandfather and help him do whatā€™s bets for him.

Plenty of very smart people believe in very stupid things. Thereā€™s been very smart people pushing stupid things throughout this pandemic. Scott Atlas, for example, has been utterly wrong and thousands of died because trump listened to that asshole. Heā€™s still a neuroradiologist at Stanford, and you donā€™t get to that level without being quite smart.

Honestly, I think the way to get to my grandpa is to appeal to the scientific side of him. Just got to get into his ear now.

I had almost the exact same conversation with someone who claimed they couldnā€™t wear a mask for health reasons. I said if she had trouble breathing through a mask she needed to go see a doctor immediately.

my journey has been thus. jab Wednesday. Super sore arm Thursday. Intense fatigue and tiredness + fever Friday. Runny nose, sneeze, slight cough, no fever Saturday. Woke up today with sore lungs, some shortness of breath, fatigue and fever.

That is shot one for me. Word on the street is that longer and more severe side effects from shot 1 indicate having covid prior.

Got a link to the article?

Usually rough first shot means easy second shot from what Iā€™ve read

Yeah, Im hoping so. This hasnt been particularly fun, but its worth it

The two wolves myth rings pretty true a lot of the time. The one that wins is the one you feed, and smart people getting fed a steady diet of bullshit will start buying into it.

counter point, just because you have an advanced degree or are good at your specific job doesnā€™t mean youā€™re actually smart in a well rounded way.

I believe that, too, and I think both things can be true at the same time.

Update: BIL pozzed yesterday, heā€™s feeling a bit worse than my sister did. Waiting on results for his dad.

Good news here, though, Mrs. TN suddenly got an email last night saying she was eligible for the vaccine because sheā€™s listed as primary caregiver for her 95yo great aunt. She gets the first dose of Pfizer on Tuesday morning.

Talked to a friend about getting the vaccine and it turns out she has not one but two extremely rare diseases that could cause fatal reactions to the covid vaccine so she canā€™t do it. Also she is waiting for more research and itā€™s her body her choice. Iā€™ve known her for a decade so itā€™s a shock that her allergies that sheā€™s never mentioned might cause her to go into anaphylactic shock and die, and that she has a rare lymph node problem where they might burst if they swell up too much. I mean you think ā€œhey I could die at any moment so here is what to do if I have a medical emergencyā€ would have came up before the exact day she found out she was eligible to get vaccinated?

where in florida are you?

What are these? I canā€™t think of anything, much less two.

Now there are rumors that Marvin Hagler died of complications after getting the vaccine. This sucks.
