COVID-19: Chapter 7 - Brags, Beats, and Variants

I got pretty sick a week after my second jab. Like a ton of phelgm, runny nose, congested as hell. Thought the same.

Also wondering if it could have been connected to the vaccine because it was the first time I’d been sick in over a year and I wasn’t in contact with really anyone but grocery store people.

Per WAPO the US did 4.5 million shots in one day yesterday. Going to be averaging 3 million shots per day within the next week or so I think, we’re already at 2.5 million. More than 1 percent of the entire US population got a shot yesterday.

It truly blows my mind how incompetent the Trump Administration was.

As I continue to age my astonishment at just how few people simply do their jobs continues to grow. Including and especially highly credentialed specialists.

I asked a worker at my local Publix how many vaccines they are giving a day. She said about 80. And there are 26 Publixes in our area of 600,000 folks. So that’s 2,080 doses a day at Publix. Divided by 2, that’s only 1,040 becoming fully vaccinated on a daily basis. There are 11 other pharmacies doling out vaccines. The local newspaper reports about 3,500 got vaccines on Friday. There have been a few drive-up events, but not many.

I guess my point is that if we’re ramping up, I’ve yet to see much evidence of that. And we really need to ramp up. I’d love to share optimism, but seeing is believing.

Every place in South Carolina is out of supply, which I’m assuming without evidence is due to horrible state government.

Counterpoint: The US administered 4.5 million shots yesterday… So we’re ramping up somewhere.

I’m sure we are doing more vaccines by the day. I guess I’m just venting a bit. After all, I live in a state governed by DeSantis. I become eligible tomorrow, but employees in education system are being “prioritized”, so I’m not optimistic about getting an appointment any time soon. I guess I’m wondering if my local publix could suddenly go from 80 vaccines a day to 300? It doesn’t feel like it could, but I don’t know.

Heard shot 2 was real rough. Shot one was some pain around the injection for a couple of days for me.

Confirm/deny

It’s different for everyone. Shot two gave me a fever north of 102 for almost 48 hours along with all the other most common symptoms. But the large majority of people I personally know had no side effects other than a sore arm.

It varies. Two of my coworkers were sick as dogs for a few days, whereas I and another coworker had an even milder reaction to the 2nd shot versus the 1st jab.

Is it an online registration system? If so, use the f5 method.

The Mrs and I had very minor symptoms. Minor chills and arm pain went away after a good nights rest.

Watch this site obsessively. You should be able to get an appointment if you’re willing to drive.

FWIW in the LA area I’ve seen tons of evidence of a ramp-up. Massive vaccination sites at Dodger Stadium, Cal State LA, and elsewhere are humming and lots of smaller “pop up” sites all over the place (like the one where I got my lucky shot). In a two week span I went from knowing like one person who had been jabbed to it being like 50% of the people I talk to regularly.

I had Pfizer shot #1 on Thursday and definitely think I’ve had some side effects. One thing I know for sure is that on Friday my arm hurt like hell, WAY more than any flu shot I’ve ever had. I don’t care whether the other stuff I’ve felt are actual side effects, psychosomatic, allergies, of whatever, as long as its not actual COVID. I’m going to be hyper vigilant until I’m a couple weeks out from shot #2.

And in other news Marvelous Marvin Hagler died yesterday and Tommy Hearns said on Twitter it was as a result of a reaction to the vaccine.

Wow. This looks awesome. I will try this tomorrow when I become eligible. Ironically, it does look like most open appointments involve a drive, but I’m okay with that.

Melkerson is being entirely reasonable

Are the anti-vaxxers still hanging around outside Dodger Stadium?

Either that, or storming malls and supermarkets without masks. They’ve got a full schedule.

In other anti-vax news, I’ve learned my kid’s girlfriend’s mother is anti-vax (and somewhat anti-mask), which is a bummer.
