COVID-19: Chapter 7 - Brags, Beats, and Variants

Why post it now?

Because theyā€™re just reporting the numbers from the (US) Helix dashboard

OK, but surely you can find a source that isnā€™t the Daily Mail.

Iā€™m probably still not going in crowds for awhile but wonā€™t be as picky for sure. Mask will stay on as long as thatā€™s the advice.

I just got offered a pretty good consulting opportunity so Iā€™ll be flying double masked even if I donā€™t get the vaccine, but continuing to search hard.

My tennis friend that lives in 55+ community was all excited because they have 70+ neighbors that are fully past their second shot and they had dinner with them yesterday.

seems bad, even when itā€™s russia reporting

plan on wearing the mask quite a bit longer

yeah, i wasnā€™t entirely serious about the last sentence, although i do think mask wearing will now be a seasonal fixture in western societies much like eastern.

thereā€™s no danger to humans yet, but based on detected outbreaks in 2020 and 2021 h5n8 is already a pandemic among birds. even if it never finds transmission from human to human, it can disrupt a lot, and will likely take massive effort where all farm fowl will need to be vaccinated.

B1.351 was never feared to be more infectious, just better at evading covid v1.0 antibodies which is why vaccine manufacturers thought good to redesign - but now B1.351 has been found mutated with UK variant (B.1.17, 40%+ more transmissible) it matters not that B1.351 is not more transmissable of itā€™s own right.

Also, maybe SA is in a lockdown? - these US tweets are quick to point out trends but rarely report on circumstancesā€¦

The good news is that UK is back to its pre-B.1.1.17 baseline in covid cases. Thereā€™s no proof this variant is more infectious. Its immune evasion is enough to explain how it took off and everyone#'s who been vaccintated was, and still is, in lockdown so it makes little difference to the stats yet

I appreciated churchill taking the time to post what he found to help me and noting the potentially dubious quality of the source. Not sure what any of this has to do with youā€“Iā€™m the one who asked him for help finding the information.

I think your take is mostly correct when one thinks objectively about the potential situation of this dragging on for years to come. Its a lot like saving the environment in my opinion. It should be appreciated the sacrifices that Wichita has made, his feelings should be respected, and he should be encouraged to do the right thing moving forward. Anyone who isnā€™t fatigued at some point is completely detached from reality, its totally normal.

Not sure what any of this has to do with you but Iā€™d prefer if we kept to reliable news sources and not hysterical Daily Mail headlines, although it was helpful to see where the ā€œSUPER-COVIDā€ appelation comes from.

Same here. I just got back from getting stuck at Yankee Stadium. We are already making travel plans to get vaccinated in all 30 MLB ballparks.

This is my favorite part of this whole thing. Colds hit me really hard. There are at least 1-2 days like I feel like I want to die. And normally I cough for at least a month after I feel like itā€™s over.

Normally I get about 1 or 2 a year. Iā€™m now on a 1+ year cold-free streak which Iā€™m pretty sure is a lifetime PR for me.

I think itā€™s everyoneā€™s business when youā€™re harassing posters for no good reason. On top of that, I feel some personal responsibility because I asked churchill to share that information and he got some self-appointed hall monitor hassling him as a thank you for obliging me.

Best breathing year Iā€™ve ever had. Lifelong battle with allergies, colds, and sinus infections.

Same here. If I ever play live poker again, Iā€™ll be wearing my mask even if the cases have gone down to zero. Always has been a germfest, and it canā€™t help but reduce my tells.

Looks wrong for Massachusetts.

Governor is Republican, and Iā€™d be absolutely floored if their state senate was red.

US senate for Montana and Wisconsin should be purple.

I heard that in the before times, there were places that wouldnā€™t let you mask up for this reason and possibly something to do with their facial recognition software. I canā€™t see them prohibiting it in the future. At least not for a very long time.

The US hit 500k deaths today.
