I know man, that’s the sad thing. She does know better. But people so badly want to believe the thing that lets them not have to feel scared/nervous/worried, so telling them that COVID-19 is someone else’s problem, or better yet, nobody’s problem, is so damn satisfying. Taking away that anxiety must feel like heroin being injected straight into their veins.
I hear you.
Something that I’ve been thinking about recently is how we’re all essentially working to alleviate discomfort. Among those of us with a heavy dose of empathy, we’re naturally concerned with reducing the widespread discomfort around us. For those currently without this outward empathy - or without the capacity to acknowledge and tolerate that level of pain - efforts to alleviate discomfort are naturally turned inward. Thus, all the people suppressing their cognitive dissonance and trying to reclaim some sense of power/agency via cultish beliefs in a world that otherwise feels out of control.
I think the world would be a better place if we all became more willing to tolerate individual discomfort in service to greater benefit - and it’s a huge credit to everyone here who is taking steps toward this. But I’m not sure how to get there more broadly. And I can sort of understand why a poor, uneducated white dude in the Appalachians - who has spent his whole life frustrated by his own perception of pain and disenfranchisement - might have a harder time making that switch. I see you, broke white dude. And I’m annoyed that you’re making things harder for everyone. But I hope someday that your life can improve as well, and that you can have more time/empathy to focus on those around you.
Masks making a comeback in the Czech Republic as of September 1st.
Places where they must be worn:
-Public transport
-Offices
-Polling stations (election upcoming in October)
-All medical facilities
-All social services facilities
-Indoor events with more than 100 participants
Places where they don’t need to be worn…yet
-Shopping centers
-Restaurants, bars, and clubs
-Outdoor events
-Gyms
-Schools (though in places like Prague it is “strongly recommended”)
There are people exempt from them (children under 2, athletes while playing sports etc) but I suspect those athletes won’t be playing for much longer.
Checking in the model, note this is the update with a climb starting TOMORROW. Plateau section seems pretty close. I may need to bump the 28 day cfr down to 1.5%, seems like thats where its levelling off.
Over 6 million cases in US. Great work guys!
I wonder if COVID-19 cases will pass the unemployment numbers by the election, and I don’t mean unemployment falling back down to COVID-19 numbers.
I’m assuming in Iowa it’s all about the meat-packing plants?
Iowa State opened up August 17 and Iowa opened up August 24 from doing a little quick research…
There are counting differently is the reason for the increase but I think that means is that they had been undercounting so hard to say if any increase is real or just that adjustment.
Gonna be hard to interpret until they figure it out. Bottom line their caseload does not support 25,000 fans at a football game. Of course transmission may be low given outdoors and hopefully mask wearing.

The approach’s chief proponent is Scott Atlas, a neuroradiologist from Stanford’s conservative Hoover Institution, who joined the White House earlier this month as a pandemic adviser. He has advocated that the United States adopt the model Sweden has used to respond to the virus outbreak, according to these officials, which relies on lifting restrictions so the healthy can build up immunity to the disease rather than limiting social and business interactions to prevent the virus from spreading.
counterpoint, they don’t care
But that’s Socialism
TBH I thought USA had been following the Sweden Model since March - like Sweden with ‘lockdown lite’… couple of weeks pass…OFB.
Of course, the main difference between Sweden and the US is 50% of Swedes live in single person households
Well, that and a much higher degree of social responsibility.
We basically are.
The healthy Swedish guy I know who still can’t go running 2 months after recovery probably wishes he hadn’t taken one for the team right now.
Victoria, Australia.
4 weeks into a hard stage 4 lockdown. Daily cases are below a hundred. Government indicating that we will start to move out of Stage 4 in the next few weeks as planned.
This second lockdown has really sucked.
Looks like the new cases leveling off after a few weeks of decline. We may be about to see a bump from school reopenings.
As we head into the time of year where ICUs are normally under stress anyway it is extremely concerning to have case numbers be where they are even at this lower(still terrible) plateau. We have been lucky to only have Covid during low census months so far. We have squandered this time however. Hopefully we have enough immunity built up to not overrun the hospitals this fall/winter but I don’t really think so.
