COVID-19: Chapter 5 - BACK TO SCHOOL

Sounds like 50k 7DMA returning is a given, maybe 60k. Sigh.

Amazingly, The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street for real…

And now I’m in another indoor restaurant (BJs). And I can see the US Border Patrol is sponsoring professional bull riding. That’s just super.

Pooling only works with low infection rate.

It is good for areas who have it under control to test more often to catch outbreaks early.

Ahhhhhhhh! What are you doing? You’re breaking my brain man. How much to get you to leave immediately?

Not much I can do other than make a giant stink.

The plan was to eat outside. But they don’t take reservations over the phone. So my mom got there first and made the reservation inside. It’s my sister’s bday dinner.

Thankfully it’s over. My mom is driving back to KC tomorrow with my hopefully not sick aunt who says she feels fine now. Praying everyone ends up ok out of this disaster.

I’m basically trusting my aunt to know if she has something different than whatever she usually gets from allergies. She’s a very smart person and doesn’t think covid is a hoax. So I don’t think she would put my mom and stepdad at risk with an 9 hour car ride if she knew something weird was happening to her.

I had no idea this was a thing but I guess it shouldn’t be surprising.

During the opening ceremonies at PBR events, the Border Patrol provides color guards and, when available, mounted horse patrol, a 10-person drum and bagpipes. At some events, the Border Patrol’s special operations group’s rappelling team descends from the arena ceiling before the playing of the national anthem.

Also, Border Patrol patches are affixed on the protective vests of four riders and the logo is prominently displayed on the front and back of the bullfighters’ jerseys. The bullfighters have been branded the “US Border Patrol Protection Team.”

So fucked up. I had no idea either. Because we live in a bubble that never sees PBR.

So, this is happening right now.

Although immigration and border security are among the most polarizing political topics in the U.S., the PBR did not hesitate in putting four of its prominent personalities front and center.

On that day, 2016 World Champion Cooper Davis, 2018 Rookie of the Year Keyshawn Whitehorse, 17-year tour veteran Sean Willingham and bullfighter Seth “Shorty” Gorham joined the Border Patrol. And they were not disappointed.

The group sprung into action when surveillance cameras spotted undocumented immigrants on the American side of the Rio Grande River. One of the PBR members broke from the pack and may have broken the law during a hectic scene.

Holy shit.

Gorham, the 41-year-old bullfighter, gave the the Border Patrol a good dose of exposure in when he posted a video on Instagram of himself attempting to chase down an undocumented immigrant who was trying escape as others were apprehended. Gorham has 60,000 followers on Instagram.

“I had one right here,’’ Gorham said on the video, referring to an undocumented immigrant. “Had him close. Had one. Found him under a tree. Tried to get him to stop. He ran off. I don’t have a radio, so I can’t talk to these guys (Border Patrol agents). But I did manage to take my shirt off and flag the helicopter. I let them know that there was one in the area.”

Of the experience, Gorham later told USA TODAY Sports, “It was a lot of fun. I’ll tell you, I always thought that fighting bulls would get your adrenaline going, but nothing like that experience there.”

Running down human beings for sport and spectacle. That is some seriously fucked up shit that even manages to shock me in 2020.

? PBR is on ESPN2 all the time.

When I was a TA I had a student who was out for a bit after he had a bullriding injury. Punctured lung, torn liver, bunch of ribs and misc broken bones. He came back and aced the class, though. Seems like a needlessly dangerous sport to me, and I’m sure the bulls don’t enjoy it. It’s fun to watch tho, I can’t deny that.

Not trying to bust your balls, but you can just say no and not do things you don’t want to do.

Edit: not trying to judge for doing the stuff either, everyone has their own operating principles, just hearing lots of folks gnashing their teeth about how they were forced to go to a 100 person indoor baptism and stuff, who are seemingly afraid to tell people no.

It would be a major major deal if I didn’t go - with everyone. I’m not that self-actualized. The plan was we’d be doing outdoor things and hanging out on my sister’s deck mostly. Of course the plan fell apart which I should have guessed.

But my mom cried like a baby when I surprised her and showed up in Denver (after my family begging me to come). So at least there’s that.

Yeah I get it, we have to make choices with a lot of context involved. A couple months back I was close to getting coerced into traveling from NY to FL for a funeral. It felt like a tricky spot in an emotionally charged situation, but I’m glad my wife and I ultimately decided it was a hard no. Rather than engaging in a negotiation or debate, that helped clarify our position moving forward and likely prevented a bunch of future uncomfortable situations.

Honestly, the ad hoc way everyone has to operate is the worst part of this whole thing. I feel like everyone would be better off if it were easier to own these decisions and say “I accepted the risk of indoor dining in Locality X” rather than “I really wanted to eat outside, but there weren’t any tables, so arrrgh inside we went”. Again, not trying to throw shade at you - your situation seems like the norm and I hear about variations of it from everyone I know. Hope everything turns out fine for ya’ll (it almost certainly will).

But that kind of stuff is just like the entire rodeo just with animals.

I want no part of any bubble that doesn’t include PBR.

Then you should have told us about this Border Patrol thing.

idk anything about any border patrol. In my bubble we don’t re-purpose established acronyms all willy-nilly.

I get it’s cheap but it sucks.

Sounds like we’re going to have to change your username to pozzer99
