COVID-19: Chapter 5 - BACK TO SCHOOL

At least in the US, the official Uber policy is that drivers and passengers wear masks and they recommend windows down when possible, so you’re on pretty firm ground to request those things. Also, I know there’s still some question about how common smear transmission is, but having some hand sanitizer with you and trying to avoid touching surfaces as much as possible can’t hurt.

Speaking of Uber CA recently passed a bill banning Uber and Lyft from operating in the state. Thats super fucked up and I don’t understand it coming from CA.

They have some bad employee practices but still a ton of people rely on it for income and a lot of people rely on it for travel. Plus people driving drunk on the road again will skyrocket which is super fucked up.

@Smacc_25 do you drive a taxi or an uber like service?

No, CA required them to treat their drivers as employees rather than contractors, which is fine

It’s the other way around. Uber and Lyft are threatening to leave because they don’t want to classify their drivers as employees, as California’s AB5 requires them to do.

I don’t think it’s that bad wearing masks. Would still avoid if possible obviously.

They didn’t ban them. They did pass ab5 that has some stupid effects because the bill was half baked despite having good intentions. Other industries had some issues too. Uber and Lyft said they would shut down services if it was enforced one way, but that has been delayed. There’s a vote on some new thing in November regarding this

The ride share companies said “if you make us treat our employees as employees we will shut down.” CA GOAT said “fine.” Seeing as both companies are already money incinerating zombies, I struggle to see how eliminating their only material revenue source will work.

Ohio. Always Ohio.

I’m gonna take some wild guesses about some of the states that were represented at the Sturgis bike rally:

Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin

There’s certainly some OFS overlap here and I could be wrong, but there’s probably not as much as overlap with the rally and school as you’d think.

Most big city taxis already had plexiglass dividers pre COVID.

God this country is so dumb

Anyone paying attention should have known this decades ago.

I didn’t do too badly for not seeing that map. I wouldn’t have picked a few of them because they’re pretty well hidden inside of normal daily case counts but thought about adding Colorado and Oregon. Colorado is basically at their front edge of this but does look like they’re going up. Oregon was a little hard to tell but looks like it’s having the same ‘Sturgis Surges Effect’ at a small scale. The problem is that rally almost exactly coincided with schools opening in some of these places.

It spreads through droplets. With windows open, sitting in the back behind plexiglass and silence, there’s little chance of it spreading. Small talk is a thing in America because people hate silence. Pop the mask on for that.

Public transport on the other hand is a whole different ball game. Kind of a shock to see that I’m in the very small minority wearing a mask here. Same with the mall. I was one of a handful of people wearing a mask there yesterday.

Taxi…I work for a company, I’m still self-employed though. Basically the same, but we take better care of our drivers and passengers + have more work alongside better contracts.
