COVID-19: Chapter 5 - BACK TO SCHOOL

I’m awaiting results on a PCR test after experiencing cough and sore throat. I think I’m about 10% that I was pozzed (symptoms began Friday, already feeling better), but even if it is a cold, there is no reason it couldn’t have been COVID.

Only a week away from seeing Forsyth County schools start closing

Well. This is view right now. The last place I ever expected to be for at least another year. But my aunt is dying (not COVID) and I need to see her. It’s a long story, but this is the one situation that would get me on a plane right now.

Paid more for delta because I know they are taking this seriously. SAN seemed to be doing well with safety, got a wipe and sanitizer on the plane.

Stopping in Minneapolis before connecting to Louisville. I expect Mlps to be good, Louisville not so much, but we’ll see.

I’m scared of COVID but more scared of not being able to say goodbye.

My mom is about to go to Charleston, SC and rent a house for a mini family reunion, I’m scared shitless for her but also my uncle has ALS and this might be the last time she sees him so there is no point in even trying to talk her out of it. Stay safe sky.

Sanity check here. Need advice.

Wife and I are in our 40s. Two step kids live with us. 20 and 17

The 20 year old works two days a week at a fast food place (against my wishes) (we make good money and could pay the kids to stay home)

The younger kid told us today she’s applying for jobs

My view point is it’s a completely unnecessary risk to the family unit because she’s going to make about 80 a week after taxes.

Her argument is my brother gets a job

She’s in high school for one more year and is really bored at home

We live in SEMichigan and the DMA is around 700-750 for the state

Wife thinks it’s ok and I’m being way to over protective at this point.

My youngest is going into sophomore year of HS, and he was also hemming and hawing about not being able to see people. We’re in NJ where we’re still not super open and they’re taking shit pretty seriously, and at least seem to have a pretty robust online-only option to along with a split option for in-person (2 days on/3 days off then the reverse, alternating which group goes in on Wed).

Thankfully we’re only locked into our option for 6 weeks, so I was able to get my son on board with starting online and then seeing if half the school gets pozzed which might make it a moot point anyway. I mean we could have dictated the decision completely, but I’m glad we all got on the same page.

Not sure what sort of work would be WFH and also take 17yos, but I’d make her find one of those.

Deaths in the family really do throw a monkey wrench into everything. My wife’s stepdad just died and our house became the de facto gathering place for everyone all week, including my MIL staying with us indefinitely since she’s not in great health either and shouldn’t be in her house alone. It’s really hard to say no to anyone in these situations, but at the same time I was super uncomfortable with a houseful of people that I think were being careful but can’t 100% vouch for.

My wife did make her one sister in NC get tested and then stay the fuck home for the next several days when it looked like it might be necessary for her to fly up, which is something at least. And the funeral itself was 100% mask compliance and then a repast outdoors, where I sat with the same family members that have been with us for the past week. Still, I’m gonna be tense for the next week or two.

Yeah, especially the dead ones.

I took it as a joke downplaying the supposed NYC flight based on people saying “they were gonna die soon anyway” about covid deaths, but maybe I’m giving Nate too much credit.

Edit: saw his follow-up tweet and he’s def serious and not satirizing covid deniers

Ha. Was about to post the follow-up. Seems like everything is simultaneously dead serious and Onion.

I’ve moved on from sore throat to a cough. Still no fever though. Hopefully my negative antigen test was accurate.

If nothing else maybe steer them towards something that’s lower risk. Fast food seems pretty high risk to me.

Could be hard to find paid WFH at 17.

Maybe you could pay her $75/week to do one or both of the following:

  1. Virtual volunteering ( couple of options here https://www.ffwd.org/volunteer/). Rewarding, looks good for college, no risk of covid.

  2. Complete Coursera course of her choosing, payment contingent on completion. (2019's Most Popular Courses | Coursera). lots of benefit to this one.

Do you feel better knowing that fever usually precedes coughing? (But some people with COVID don’t get a fever before moving on to the next symptom.)

Have her make calls for Biden.

I think it’s very unlikely I have covid, but slightly more now that I’m coughing.

Has anybody on UP had covid yet?

No. But then we’re all above average with precautions. Less than 2% of the country has tested positive.
