COVID-19: Chapter 5 - BACK TO SCHOOL

I would be shocked if masks aren’t a huge difference maker even when used poorly by a chunk of the population.

Yeah pretty much. Those business models weren’t designed for a pandemic at all.

I cannot speak for TX and FL, but Newsome’s rules in CA are being straight-up ignored by local officials in many counties that are doing really badly. And then even in places where local government is taking it semi-seriously tons of individuals and businesses are doing whatever they want without consequence. I’m in one of the hardest-hit cities (Glendale) in the hardest-hit county (LA) in California and mask compliance in public is nowhere near 100%. People are still having big gatherings at their homes on the regular. There was a goddamn wedding and wedding reception near us a couple weeks ago. My Nextdoor is STILL full of people arguing about masks, saying that businesses and schools need to open.

Was yesterday the first decline in total cases from the same day of the previous week?

I’m still not really satisfied by any explanation for it leveling off. Mask wearing is better than it was, but still mediocre in rural areas. The bars and restaurants are still OFB across basically the entire south.

I don’t really get the SDI as an explanation either. Maryland has been stellar for SDI and Arkansas has been dogshit, but their trendlines have been similar.

Either way, if this is the “second wave” cresting and we see a respite, you can bet that the third wave will be even bigger and dumber.

Yeah I guess when you factor in raw numbers ca has more deplorables than most red states and there is only so much a Gov can do. Can we deport them to red states?

Also a bigger state…

Most importantly, I think california is more willing to test widely and report accurately. I don’t trust florida and texas at all.

Ugh I just read my Nextdoor, which I try not to do, and people are still trying to say this is because of the protests. I can’t.

This is fully consistent with the herp derp home schooler cultists demanding that schools be reopened in the fall.

City passed a bylaw yesterday. $100 fine.

per Worldometers

As far as the SDI stuff I think it is interesting but seems pretty far from perfectly predictive imo.

Oh Canada, our home and native land!

Florida another 9785/138 day on about 50,000 tests. So still 19-20% positivity. It sure seems like they are simply testing less than they were a few weeks ago. They certainly aren’t testing more.

Was there ever confirmation of the idea that tests are worthless if they’re not processed within 7 days? Could we be seeing a slight decrease in cases because testing is completely flooded and lots of the tests are false negatives?

This is definitely a possible explanation. Florida is pretty much at peak positivity though so if that is the case the situation there is even more dire than we think.

I’m not disagreeing with u but my thought process is sullied by reports of some masks are much more effective than others and some can be detrimental to the user when they are fiddled with. I’m also seeing first hand a discouraging trend towards fashionable masks over actual utility .

I do know that lots of the major towns in Florida have instituted mask mandates. The last time I went to the store in my ruby red city mask usage was at 100%. Our cases had been steady rising but growth seems to have slowed down.

You ought to be able to store RNA for longer than that, unless the labs are just goofing up the storage.

I took that post to mean that someone isn’t going to change their behavior for seven days while they wait for a test result.
