Who is “they”. Maybe you could make that argument about Airbnb (it’s wrong but whatever) but there are tens of thousands of people who supplement their income and/or their mortgage renting on their platform.

People with your job are amazing. I could never do it but am so grateful you can.

By following zero of the regulations put in place to protect renters or to force hotels to contribute to their local community via fees etc.

AirBnb landlording is pure rent seeking. There isn’t a violin small enough for these people.

Pretty familiar story, really. Business person enters business with risks, fails to properly mitigate those risks (in the case by, for example, having adequate cash reserves in an inherently volatile business), suffers financial distress as a result and (of course) goes looking for handouts. F off.

Operating a hotel without paying hotel tax is pretty bad for municipalities yeah. We don’t have to support EVERY form of small business that exists. Many small business people are the nut low. There are entire industries where every single person involved sucks.

Residential rentals are particularly bad for this (Air BnB or otherwise). I can’t tell you how many times someone I know had proposed to buy a property to rent because rent > mortgage and I have to explain to them that occupancy is not 100%, buildings have maintenance costs, even that the net income is taxable!

Yet another reason letting Covid rage unchecked here is totally dumb.

My younger child’s school district has announced that the school year will begin 100% remote learning, with accommodations for kids in special situations. The plan calls for a transition to in-person learning after the first trimester, but I think they know that’s not going to happen. This just sounds better to some people than “no in-person learning this year”.

This is the right call. It’s sinking in for me that the educational, social, and mental health issues associated with this isolation are on ME to address as best I can. Sending kids to school was a really convenient way to outsource much of these needs, but that’s just not possible right now.

GLENDALE, CA – The Glendale Unified Board of Education made a decision Tuesday to start the 2020-21 school year with all students participating in an online distance learning model. The district will offer on-campus childcare during the regular school day for elementary-age students, prioritizing students currently enrolled in state-subsidized childcare programs, foster/homeless youth, and children of employees and other essential workers. Students reporting to campus for childcare will be grouped into small, supervised technology learning pods to ensure proper physical distancing. Whether students report to campus or stay at home, they will all participate in the same online curriculum. The district will distribute Chromebooks and internet hotspots to all students who need them, and will continue to provide free meals for all families. The first day of school for the 2020-21 school year will be August 19, 2020.

“The health and safety of our students, employees, families, and our broader community is and always will be the utmost important factor in all of our decisions,” said Glendale Unified Board President Dr. Armina Gharpetian. “We are committed to offering a robust online curriculum for our students this fall and we look forward to returning to on campus classes as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Possibly bad, but also these people were having imaging done on their hearts for a reason so they’re not necessarily a representative sample.

Airbnb landlords are rent seeking and taking advantage of everyone by renting properties below cost and driving themselves out of business?

It wasn’t thus when they entered the space. When they entered they were able to underbid existing competitors by simply not dealing with any of the tax or regulatory issues that go with the business.

I’m sorry but these gig economy apps are a cancer. Absolutely extending that to Uber/Lyft as well.

I don’t particularly care about the hotel tax or the hotel industry. The hotel tax where I am is 14% and I doubt that’s the difference between people airbnbing or not. For most of the times I’ve either used it or known people who have used airbnb, what they provided was a way to rent a house for a couple of days - which is something that had previously been all but impossible.

I’m sympathetic to the notion that land should not be ownable and therefore not rentable, but not specifically airbnb is worse than other renting/owning. If it locally is causing specific problems, then cities can regulate it and they do.

kinda bonkers that people are defending airbnb. the reason it works is you don’t have to follow regulations so your prices can be a lot lower than legal room/house rental.

You’re talking about the 14% hotel tax?

Airbnb didn’t change a law or regulation so that you can rent a house for a day.

I think some law like “a house or hotel room cannot be vacant for more than 2 weeks a year - if it is anyone can at least temporarily squat” would be solid and alleviate the problems airbnb causes.
