COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

great!

Minor clarification: in these applications, the bleach is there to sanitize the wash water (which is then reused), not to sanitize the leafy greens. If youā€™re washing them under your kitchen faucet, thereā€™s no need, and if youā€™re using a bowl or something youā€™re not making things safer by adding bleach at the dilutions used in agricultural settings.

I have to imagine that the risk of transmission during takeout - with precautions - is something like 1/1000 or less. That said, I have a ton of respect for JTā€™s dedication to completely minimizing risk. Weā€™ve done takeout once in two months just to place a huge order from a struggling local business, but I have no judgment for the people who are doing it more regularly. Itā€™s hard to pursue scientifically-optimal decision-making when itā€™s not 100% clear what the science is.

Regarding the ā€œbad adviceā€ā€¦I get all my info from this site, so I didnā€™t directly get this bad advice, but was the ā€œdonā€™t get a maskā€ advice really from these experts? Was it more about saving masks for doctors and nurses than telling people it was actually better for them to not wear masks?

Well, as Kurt Vonnegut said, ā€œsmoking is the only honorable form of suicide.ā€

At one point we were told smear transmission was the primary mode of transfer.

Maybe. We donā€™t know that for sure yet, last I checked.

Not saying youā€™re wrong, but this article from a legit source even recommends different concentrations for different products, which wouldnā€™t seem necessary if they were only sanitizing the water.

But there are probably ten things we are more likely to get from poor food prep than corona virus, so if we are just worried about that, we absolutely should never eat take out or in a restaurant. And I mean never. Before corona virus, after corona virus, if corona virus never existed.

I think it is much harder to mitigate the risk of other diseases and illnesses via food than it is corona virus.

Yeah I honestly wasnā€™t implying that you were judgmental - just clarifying my own position.

In a more general sense, I think we are pretty aligned in philosophy here. The stance in our household is essentially ā€œweā€™re going to do the absolutely best we can to limit transmission, both because we feel itā€™s important and to compensate for the idiots who are gleefully spreading this at rallies.ā€

Hmm, Iā€™ll ask Mrs. Catface about it. She regulates this kind of stuff and originally told me the wash water thing, but I probably misunderstood her point.

For those of you with kids in college, probably time to tell them to start looking for a job.

Well it looks like Iā€™m going to be heading to a funeral sometime in the next week or so. Itā€™s going to be in a huge church and (Iā€™m hoping) not many people will be there, so it will be possible to keep our distance and wear masks. But most of my extended family are trumpfans and think that the disease has been conquered and is no longer a big deal. If I skipped it Iā€™d probably never hear the end of it, it just sucks to be in this position.

What is predictit for Fauci getting fired? After telling the truth to the senate today, I donā€™t see how he doesnā€™t get terminated.

Full spacesuit. And Iā€™m only partially mocking. Rock the best mask you can find, goggles and gloves. Open carry in case anyone wants to fuck w you.

Just lost an uncle this week. My Dads brother in law. Hopefully he doesnā€™t go.

Sorry for loss, be careful.

Doesnā€™t seem like thereā€™s anything really clear thatā€™s being disagreed about. And Iā€™ll still think thatā€™s true after you disagree with this post.

What evidence are we ignoring here? Are there any reliable studies of COVID being transmitted through takeout food?

Seems like thereā€™s definitely a both sides answer to this. There is evidence of surface transmission, right? OTOH, evidence of transmission via takeout wouldnā€™t mean that takeout were anything like a high risk if you just threw out the wrapping and washed your hands.

Just skip it. Fuck 'em. Not the dead of course, but I promise you the dead could not care less if you attend.

Yes? Thatā€™s what the article says upfront!

Because itā€™s a respiratory virus and youā€™re in danger when people are together in groups.Completely different ballgame.
