COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Science evolves as new info is learned. If they have a large enough sample size of contact trace data available, it seems like this should be a no brainer conclusion to make.

If the nightmare scenario we feared of people walking around as asymptomatic spreaders, never even knowing they had the disease, is a scenario that’s not super common - I for one take this as excellent news.

Fwiw I trust the WHO more than the cdc at this point.

I’m sorry that the people at your school board are illiterate morons, I’m not sure how that’s the CDC’s fault.

How do you know if you are asymptomatic or presymptomatic?

It is a very big deal in countries that do contact tracing if only the people who get symptoms do 99% of the spreading. You could track down and isolate most of the people they came into contact with prior to becoming symptomatic and test/isolate them as well. In USA #1 where there is zero plan or contact tracing then I’m not sure how it helps us much.

Eventually you know - this is super duper huge news if true. It means contact tracing will be extremely effective. If there is some huge unknown crowd of people out there that are spreading and unaware (and never become aware) then contact tracing becomes a far more difficult feat.

Edit: I see your point about USA#1 but i still think it’s v good news

I completely agree. In the US with 20k new cases a day and not only no infrastructure to contact trace but no intention to I don’t see how it helps us much. For Europe and other places that have gotten their numbers down it is a game changer no doubt.

It also explains some of the mystery of why this thing hasn’t exploded harder. If the asymptomatic people don’t spread it very much the transmission chain is cut by asymptomatic carriers not seeded by it.

So yup. The key is the definitions. When the Americans are saying Fahrenheit and the Canadian supplier is saying Celsius, the space shuttle blows up.

I’m just going to ignore this WHO report until someone with some real gravitas writes a more definitive review.

Of course I expect it’s all “told you so, don’t need masks” in the derposphere, lets get back to churchin’ and square dancin in the beer tent.

In other news wtf w Oregon. Quite the ramp up.

Meh, the flu also spreads almost entirely by symptomatic carriers and it’s still endemic worldwide. I’m not sure this news changes much.

I’m strongly leaning that they separated out the never develops symptoms as “a-“ and the does develop eventually as “pre-“ symptomatic and the report is referring specifically only to the “a-“ group.

But let’s wait a couple of days before we speculate on the meaning.

It is one of the hardest things to mentor. Another colleague and I refer to it as “not chasing butterflies”. Heck- it’s hard for me to not do it. Takes a lot of discipline and a lot of times going off half-cocked.

I mean I know that’s hyperbole but it’s not what happened.

I don’t know how to break this to you, but our knowledge about this virus is going to change over time and the experts who are trying to stop it are going to wind up being wrong about things. When you’re told “This parameter is especially challenging to estimate” and then you go into a fuming rage when the estimate is wrong, be prepared to spend the next few years being very angry.

Christ also told hospitals to fully activate their emergency plan, in keeping with an executive order from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey that calls for expanding hospital bed capacity, first by 25% and then by 50%.

So oopsie they weren’t totally clear and have now inadvertently put some info out there that’ll be used non-stop as anti-mask propaganda. Oh, well. Nothing to see here. Move along, now.

This. 99% of people who see this will only remember, that no symptoms means no transmission. That’s not even what it said, but it won’t matter. They just got millions of people killed worldwide, full stop. GJGE WHO!

I’m sure if I hadn’t nuked two of my formerly closest friendships over their attitude toward COVID and protests, they’d be blowing up my phone today with “SEE???” and when I explained it I’d be told I’m too negative.

It’s not like his school board is any more moronic re covid than 85% of the country.

There will be a national day of celebratory door knob licking over this news before we’re ready to begin specualtion here.

That is not at all what is going on here and I suppose you know that.

Herein lies the problem. When faced with a problem of this scope that threatens every single human’s life and quality of life, the percentage of people who are intelligent AND able to actually process the scope of the threat is extremely low. You’ve got smart people all over who normally don’t act this way grasping at straws for reasons to YOLOOOOOO OFB PARTAAAAAYYYYY!!!

Right before I blew up my friendship with maybe my best friend, our argument over this culminated with him making a passionate argument that we were alive in the greatest time in human history, there was no way this went on more than like 6-12 months, and no way 250,000+ people would die in the US.

Just a generic 34 year old college educated liberal who just became a lawyer using all that education and reasoning to justify going out for fucking dinner in a restaurant in Texas.

If you excluse a few small countries (less than 20m) USA will overtake Spain tomorrow as most cases on the planet per capita. Pretty impressive stuff.

The assertion that the US is doing zero contact tracing doesn’t jive with my understanding. My county in NY has been doing contact tracing for positive cases since the outbreak began.

Not saying the US has some awesome national system or anything, but local/regional/county/state health departments are absolutely doing some amount of contact tracing.

Again not saying that they are doing it well or enough, but it’s definitely happening.

Im pretty sure he means we as a collective. The government OBVIOUSLY has the means to help support people who need it, and we likely have enough capacity to actually institute a UBI, but we have no political will to do so.

WE as a collective, and as our leaders, have decided that the only way this humanity thing works is if the majority of the people toil away at busy work in order to appease the machine that is capitalism.

NY may be doing it. The vast majority of states aren’t. The Federal government sure as hell isn’t. NY will be negatively impacted by the Federal government and the other states being fuckups.

I’m not even sure it is possible to contact trace when there are 20k new cases a day you are talking about tracking down and testing/isolating 100k+ people a day. Our government can’t get the slightest thing right. They definitely aren’t up to that task.

Just goes to show you how much of history is probably myth over fact.

Casino STONKS are up like 50% over the past month lol.
