COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Went, with 3 others, to Microsoft TechEd 2000 in Amsterdam - huge week long conference - and for the final night they booked the Ajax stadium and Bryan Adams. Our boss couldn’t understand why none of us gave a shit and spent the evening at the Greenhouse.

That’s a perfect boss story. Why are so many of them completely clueless about standard things?

Sue was great - just awful taste in music.

I remember one who tried to coerce me into going to some godawul military parade he had tickets to (as an ex member of the armed forces), when it was obvious to everyone else in the department it wouldn’t be my thing.

A group of us were once, in the mid 90s, at a manger’s house for after meal drinks and someone suggested (lol) he put some music on. “Our CDs are there, you can choose one if you like” he replied, pointing at a single, sparsely populated CD rack containing about 5 CDs of 80s pop and nothing else. LOL no thanks.

That will always annoy me. British pubs are more than just places for randoms to drink and often have histories that go back a long way.

Just scanning his wiki entry, he’s a vegan and a PETA supporter, big save-the-whaler, too. Might be more about the alleged bat-eating than anything else. The thing about the pub is classic arsehole stuff, though. Can’t imagine it was cheaper or easier than soundproofing his place if it bothered him that much.

I smoked 1 to 2 packs a day for a large number of years (~ 20ish) and it was very hard to quit. Multiple failed efforts. A couple of successful efforts of greater than 6 months to a year only to start again. Then one day I decided I was done and that was that - after the usual 3 weeks of withdrawal hell anyway. I look back at it with no fond memories and no longer have any urges even with people smoking around me. I’m not sure what was different the time I finally quit versus all the failed times. Kind of weird.

Or he could just move. If you’re rich enough to pull the “spite buy the pub” move then you’re rich enough to just live is a different luxury apartment or whatever.

Catching up

Dad quit cold after 35 years at age 49. 2 packs+ of unfiltered pall malls. It was quit or die. Bronchial tubes collapsed twice in same night. Why they sent him him the first time?? A year later I get into tennis then he joins in. He is 90 with mild COPD. Only stopped tennis due to his eyesight. GL all.

Smear transmission- everyone has their own concern level. One thing to point out is that it is SOMETHING you can easily control yourself. So I think that’s why some folks go to the nth degree. But imo I think the most lax approach itt is probably very good overall.

As to why some states are fading- I do suspect that report shenanigans are part of it. I do think people have stayed home more than thought from the Wapo data. Most of the publicized bigger gatherings have been outside in nice weather so that could be a factor. Heck vitamin D could be a factor as the mystery places all seem to be in the south. It’s all still so 1 and 0. With a 1/1000 or less infected in an area—a church gathering of 200 people is more likely than not to be ok as a one-off but the downside could be spread from 1 case to 25.

I think he is a lefty. If you read the rest of the post I think it’s more of a misguided pro-vegan post.

CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. A song by me. Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs at the @royalalberthall, but thanks to some fucking bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus. My message to them other than “thanks a fucking lot” is go vegan. To all the people missing out on our shows, I wish I could be there more than you know. It’s been great hanging out in isolation with my children and family, but I miss my other family, my band, my crew and my fans. Take care of yourselves and hope we can get the show on the road again soon. I’ll be performing a snippet from each album we were supposed to perform for the next few days. Pretty sure revoking the Darwin port would end very poorly for Australia.

Anyone who doesn’t think China won’t fight back and/or bully has not been paying attention and is not really aware of the dependence a lot of other places have on it.

Since most of these shouts against China are based on local politicians appealing to their xenophobic base and not any actual desire to solve or fix anything, nobody should expect China’s attitude to change.

Haha Canadians are not nice.

Been a causal smoker (with the occasional chew) over the last 15-20 years, never got into the vaping stuff. I can go months without a cigarette and have never been addicted but if I’m at a cabin or partying for the weekend I can smoke a pack in no time and love it. I enjoy the act of smoking and the social aspect of it, if I could do it with no consequences I’d love to be a real smoker. Luckily I’ve never dealt with addiction so while it’s defintely possible to be a long term casual user of nicotine/tobacco without the really bad negatives all you have to do is look at the amount of people who are addicted to see that your odds aren’t great.

Way more smokers in this forum than I would have expected.

JT,

I like you as a poster, but no need to put such bad vibes in the thread. Things are hard enough as it is. Cheers!

After two days of about having Covid-19 cured I am going to guess today’s numbers are back at 25k+/2k+.

How dare you bring a sense of perspective into this of all threads.

We take reasonable precautions, wearing masks in public and disposable gloves in the supermarket and washing hands on entering the house and after unpacking groceries, and if despite all this we still get this virus it’s just lol @ us and we’ll take the 1/200 chance of dying.

There’s only so much you can do without feeling like a neurotic freak, and it seems likely that unless it magically disappears in summer or a vaccine appears and is distributed to people this year, most people will catch this at some point because most countries aren’t going to be able to quarantine for long enough to reduce the infection rate sufficiently so that when R rises on reopening it’s containable until a solution is found.

I mean, JT was compared to an antivaxxer earlier ITT because he correctly pointed out that some articles had bad arguments. That’s not to say that takeout ISN’T safe, but the premises of “we only tested how long the virus lives on surfaces in the lab, so it might be less time in the real world” and “I am I virologist and I’m not worried” don’t imply the conclusion of takeout food is safe.

I think that, assuming your delivery person is taking proper precautions, takeout is likely just as safe as groceries. But I also agree with JT that we’re often left piecing this stuff together ourselves because scientists are largely terrible at both communication and constructing a logical argument.

I like to both sides things.

It would be pretty reasonable to never get in a car. Dangerous as hell. In my family

1 first cousin killed
1 second cousin killed (that I know)
Sister-in-Law nearly killed - months in a care facility
Aunt thrown out a car face smashed
Grandmother thrown out of a car

I think about the risks of driving and often don’t because a trip isn’t that important. I worry the next time a kid flies into the street on a skateboard right in front of me I won’t see it in time. My kids aren’t driving yet and I’m definitely not pushing them.
