COVID-19: Chapter 10 - Mission Achomlished!

The reporting on this has been astonishingly bad, and I mean worse than science reporting in general. And it wasn’t just the usual hacks like Nate Silver or Yggy who are sort of paid to be contrarian dipshits. Consensus opinions from credentialed experts were given a backseat to completely unsourced DoD memos, it was a mess. I don’t blame people for misjudging how likely the lab leak theory was. Should have been a mostly settled issue after the two lineages were discovered months, more recent updates have solidified things further.

Haven’t these wastewater studies been kind of dodgy in the past?

We’ve been doing this for three years now. Hasn’t the spring generally been the low point in 2021 and 2022? There will likely be another surge in mid to late summer

Nah, by then we’ll have finally done what Trump wanted all along and there won’t be enough testing to show a surge.

The problem is that the experts who could convincingly argue that this evidence was persuasive announced publicly that it was a settled issue before this evidence was available. It’s not great for your credibility to announce the results of the investigation before you do the investigation!

Fucking bullshit. Blaming actual scientists for issues with trust while peddling people Oster like you have is too much. People like you are the problem, not people using actual evidence for their positions.

That data has been available a long ass time too. The papers are just being published now. It’s also important to note that every serious piece of work and evidence done on this supports a natural origin. Gmafb

How did that “Covid doesn’t spread in schools” work out for you btw?

That isn’t remotely what happened.

But what if is feels like it did? Chessmate fact-tard.

Kind of embarrassing to have all the evidence on your side and overwhelmingly fail to convince the public.

It’s hard to convince people who fell for “the respiratory virus doesn’t spread in schools”

Schools do not significantly increase community transmission

Anyone still masking?

Mayo Clinic not even requiring it anymore.

Yeah and the rest of that document says what again? Because it says things like “with safety precautions” and “community wide mitigation strategies”. None of which happened, were things Oster argued against, and that bullshit killed kids. Well done.

Only when I go to schools

You’re being misleading. The full context is pretty unambiguous about what they’re saying:

Schools do not significantly increase community transmission, especially when guidance outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is followed. 1,2Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in schools can still occur. The risk may be greater for individuals and families who are not vaccinated. However, schools and school-supported programs are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being.

That’s pretty much exactly what I’ve always said. And while there were schools run by various GOP loons that operated without reasonable safety precautions, it’s absolutely true that many schools did their best, and did a good job, of keeping their students safe. Small sample size alert, but my kids were both exposed at school and didn’t get sick, perhaps because their schools implemented a bunch of reasonable safety measures. So in answer to your earlier question, my advocacy of schools being open earlier and adopting reasonable safety measures has worked really well.

Still masking in poker rooms cause poker players are nasty. Masking at all drs offices and most shopping trips. Have relaxed masking when at a restaurant or small to medium sized indoor gathering.

This is an awful take that pretends a century of the philosophy of science and media studies doesn’t exist.

Pretty much any time I’m in public and at work, mostly because every time I’ve started to think about getting rid of the masks there’s been a COVID outbreak in the office.

Stop masking regularly over a year ago.

Only do so at doctor’s office and when sick nowadays.

Bullshit.

In the last 6 months or so, I think I’ve only masked at medical appointments.

Might wear one on the trans-Atlantic flight I’m going on in a few weeks.
