If you gave me 2:1 and we picked a random accountant, I’d bet against him doing it correctly too. A backdoor roth is just not something that a lot of people do. So most accountants don’t have a lot of experience with it either.
Every year, I just go to this bloke’s website and follow the step by step directions. It’s super easy to follow and has screenshots of each step. It’s also easy to check. Just do the backdoor Roth at the very end and make sure that you are paying the same amount of tax at the beginning and the end (it will change during the intermediate steps of the data entry process).
That was only one dosing schedule. They could have tried others which there is reason to believe may work. I assume those trials are ongoing, but I have no idea.
lol i just dealt with this exact problem like four hours ago and read through this very link.
In the online version of TurboTax, it will let you go through to the bitter end without adding your traditional IRA contribution if you input a 1099-R form. I’ll bet a significant chunk of the people who backdoor Roth piss away all the advantages upfront by paying double taxes on the contribution. A major glitch.
Good bet, imo. As I mentioned above I have had two accountants do this wrong and one of them did exactly this.
@moderators , someone may want to excise all the tax talk to the individual economics thread. There is some tax talk there to, so it will fit in just fine.
COVID policy is truly ridiculous at this point. The contrast between air travel and everything else, and even within the category of air travel, just makes no sense at all.
Of course, it all flows from fucking assholes who won’t get vaccinated. I absolutely fucking hate these people.
Czech Minister of Health said restrictions are never coming back.
I mean that feels like tempting fate doesn’t it? If you aren’t offering fourth shots yet, eventually you will go back. The virus will evolve to something that can evade our immune system and it’ll be another wave.
Speaking of travel, I’m supposed to be wearing a mask on the train but I’m alone in my private business class section. Nice to be left alone.
Train is so much better than plane even for longish trips like this one.
You should hate those people. You should feel as much rage towards them as they feel towards any restrictions you would place on them. You shouldn’t even think of them as people.
The contrast of COVID policies at different levels is because we have an outdated form of federalism that gives too much power to the states. The Constitution is dumb.
I honestly don’t know enough to know if we still need masks on planes or testing policies like we have to enter the country in a vacuum. What I do know is those things don’t do a damn bit of cumulative good when we are in 100% let it rip season everywhere. Maybe they limit risk of transmission on the actual flights but i imagine we are getting exposed to covid constantly everywhere else. Bars/restaurants are packed across the globe. The airplane policies don’t make sense when put in perspective with the rest of the mitigation policies most of the world has accepted.
Although to me the masking is an extremely minor inconvenience. Having to wrangle covid tests abroad as a fully boosted person is the annoying part. Pretty much all of the rest of the world has dropped the testing requirement for vaxxed people. It’s laughable that with how badly the US has handled covid we are one of the last standing at this point on that issue.
I think that much like the TSA security theatre stuff, this is going to persist because it’s a way to frame the COVID problem as a problem with foreigners. Of course it is objectively stupid but a world where it’s perfectly sensible to crowd into Olive Garden unmasked (and possibly unvaccinated) but require visitors from other places to jump through all kinds of hoops will just feel like “common sense” for Joe Sixpack.
The testing shit is truly absurd. Three jabs and I have to find a test for the whole family within 24 hours of departure. Oh by the way it’s Easter then a bank holiday when nothing is open. Fuck off Joe Biden.
A lot of major airports have rapid testing available if you are in a jam. It’s like 5x the normal price or so though. I’ve actually missed a flight that ended up costing me a decent chunk of money or so due to this shit in the last few months when my results didn’t come back in time.
If you can plan in advance, the take-home COVID tests with a live proctor are great for entering or returning to USA#1. Saves you having to find a test in an unfamiliar location. There are typically links to purchase all over the airline sites and your reservation.
Yeah we just did a weekend trip to the US and my wife used these (I already had an appointment at a clinic). But it takes all the logistics out of if, you just do the test on your own time from wherever you are at.
