It’s what I spent yesterday railing on and on about in the stonks gambling thread. Everything is connected and there is no way that all of these 2nd and 3rd order effects and the pain they will eventually bring have been anywhere near realized yet.

Not sure if this has been posted - it tries to estimate the R0 values for states and countries - before and after shut down measures.
“One interesting thing to note is that the 5 states with the lowest initial R0 estimates also happen to be the 5 least densely-populated states in the US: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, and Wyoming. Our model has zero knowledge of population density, yet it was able to indirectly deduce that from the R0.”

Went to the grocery store and I’m pretty disheartened by the state of things. There were a lot less people there than last time I went and everyone was wearing masks, but people had mostly given up on keeping 6 feet away from each other. Even in the mostly empty parking lot people would walk right by you without keeping any distance at all.
Seems like this is the downside to the masks, people feel like they’re protected and they don’t need to worry about it. My best guess is something like one out of every hundred people walking around has it, so I’m not feeling too good about my chances.
It was obvious that America is full of nutters decades ago when large numbers of them started claiming they’d been abducted by aliens.

Ohio’s economic development plan for dying communities in the 80s was to build prisons and hire the locals as guards. This turned out…very poorly.

I see that, plus the outbreak is now ripping through the community. That 10 deaths is going to be getting a bump in two weeks.
We should see South Dakota deaths spiking from all the Smithfield related positives earlier in April.
The population density effect seems real, most of the small community outbreaks have hit places of highly localized density like prisons, nursing homes, and manual labor shops (eg meat cutting).

The only mask Pence wears is the gimp mask Trump makes him wear.
