COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

If it’s something like dilute bleach seems like it would be fine.

An exponential equation still works but for practical purposes we are in a fairly linear part of that curve. Mine are all done in multipliers which are really exponential curves. I think this is more robust across the wide range of rates than logistic but I’m open to discussion.

If anyone is familiar with Beer’s law on light transmission/absorbency there is an area of the curve we use in biology where the optical density (OD) is almost linear below 0.4 units. But since it is a log function a reading of .8 is meaningless without a lot of math. So we just always dilute the samples to make the reading below 0.4 and multiply by the amount of dilution. (0.1 x 10 = 1.0) Less error in the dilution than the instrument error when too much of the light is absorbed. We use this to measure the amount of cells in a mL of culture. For E. coli 1 OD unit is about 3x10^8 cells or about 0.4mg/mL.

But the stock price means it’s a great drug (ie Trump and the stock market re: the economy)

Cv tracking had 34k. I had 36k? World 39k?

Trying to look while having a convo with the wife. I will look closer this week to see if I’m just stupid or something is different. Might be time of day. Known vs probable cases.

I don’t remember the number or if it is still true but the number of people with tapeworms is shocking.

Shout out to philly where the F word is standard.

Way out in Malvern, a Wegmans employee (who, again, asked to be anonymous) says that customers don’t seem to realize that she’s putting her life on the line just by showing up to work. “I used to go by ‘the customer is always right,'” she tells Philly Mag. “But things are different now. Show me some fucking respect.”

This is apparently a pic of Alex Jones protesting the stay at home orders.

Some proof he believes at least some of his bullshit.

incredibly the 50yo wife of one my friends (UK doctor/lawyer couple) was diagnosed with TB a few months ago. Apparently she didn’t get vaccinated as a child and they reckoned that it had lain dormant for years.

I don’t think I got it either as I vaguely remember being instructed by my university lecturer bacteriologist father not to get one of the jags and I don’t have a scar on my arm.

In college someone in our class got TB and they tested all of us with some prick that makes your skin raise or something. Was a whole serious health department thing.

That explains the apocalyptic prophesies itt.

They tested you with Trump?

When my daughter was in pre-school she tested positive for TB. We live in SoCal. Her pre-school teachers were both from Sri Lanka, though neither had been out of the country recently, and none of the other kids tested positive. We thought maybe it was a bad test so had her tested again a month later. The second test included a chest X-Ray, which was negative, but the arm bubble test was still positive.

We had to give her oral antibiotics for a long ass time, all the while reading about the possible side effects of the drugs to the liver and kidneys. About two years after the treatment we got a notice from the pharmacy that we never went to pick up the final course of the antibiotics. We are 99.99% positive we did the full course and it’s an error on the part of the pharmacy, but every now and then when I can’t sleep, I think about the horrifying articles I read about the antibiotic-resistant strains of TB that hang around in your body for 30 years before making themselves known.

There’s a video of him high fiving and bro hugging his followers.

I must be missing something, but isn’t the blue line also an exponential growth curve with lower r?

Haven’t followed thread or news in general for a while but is USA consensus that the worst is not yet behind you? I’ve been following the stock market as my only barometer and clearly the prognosis there can’t be accurate. In Australia it seems like the current outbreak will be gone in a couple of months (helps to be an island) - I know one state hasn’t had any new cases for days.

Alex was never svelte but shit he got really fat since he’s been wiped off of social media.

Went grocery shopping for first time in about 10 days. No shortages on anything except still no yeast or flour. So odd. Toilet paper was fully stocked.

Trump and the GOP are like “Everything is fine. Get back to work!” Everyone else is like “LOL no.” 90% of Dems and 75% of R’s think we need to stay home and wait this out.
