COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

Common right wing talking point right now and not remotely based in fact. It is based on a minority of places who dont have enough tests to test all the dead bodies are counting presumed covid deaths as covid deaths. Any errors there are likely dwarfed by places like Florida that are actively counting as few as possible.

If anything itā€™s the other way around and that people die from Covid but arenā€™t tested. Not enough testing and the turn around time for tests is not fast enough in some locations.

Well i got the silver in that race. Ill take it.

Yeah this is a new Fox News derposphere propaganda point.

When New York dumped previously uncounted deaths they started saying they are counting death for ANY reason as Covid.

This is of course not true and undoubtedly every single jurisdiction is still undercounting Covid deaths.

Posted about this like 3 weeks ago. This has been the derposphere line for awhile.

For a person who probably loves the American flag, sheā€™s desecrating it in a pretty tacky way.

Fact check: Does China have a higher death rate than America?

At his press conference, President Trump defended his administrationā€™s response to the outbreak, saying that China had a higher death rate than the US.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, America has a far higher death toll - 37,938, compared with 4,636 in China.

But the death rate in China current stands at 5.5%, one percentage point higher than that of the US.

For what itā€™s worth, I got this anecdotal report from my Dad about my cousin who died a few days ago:

He collapsed at home and was taken to the local hospital where they were unable to revive him. The hospital is ascribing it to covid-19 but apparently the family isnā€™t convinced. He had some ongoing medical problems but his death was unexpected. The family was being very careful to avoid exposing him to the virus.

Donā€™t know why people think that antibodies offer total immunity. Not all antibody creation is created equal. Having them only means that you are more resistant to the illness.

If I got covid19 and recovered, I wouldnā€™t walk around without a mask thinking I was invincible.

One of the single guys should post a masked up Tinder profile and live blog the Trader Joes first dates.

Wow. Googling around on IHME and hear is a paper from South Korea in 2018 calling bullshit on the IHME model. In fact they say that there is a ā€œblack boxā€ in the calculations as compared to a WHO model.

I did not read in detail but Iā€™m interring itā€™s this bullshit Gaussian curves (though they now claimed to aid ā€œexponential splinesā€ whatever that means). At least mine is very easy to describe with normal maths and justification.

lol I didnā€™t notice that.

UP has its first test subject. We need data. You have a duty to go to the nearest Covid Ward and give us daily updates.

(I completely agree with your stance, stay safe).

What do you do?

Iā€™ve just started my part time masters in Energy Systems.

The reason why people think antibodies = immunity is that thatā€™s the normal path to curing the first infection: antibodies develop and take care of it. The antibodies take a while to wear off.

NYtimes starting to do diner deep dives on dying to own the libs:

I consult in the industrial biotech field (think chemcials and biofuel)

30+ years as a fermentation microbiologist from lab peon to group director. Specialize in scale-up for pilot testing to production.

Biggest arc of career and claim to ā€œfameā€ is the Natureworks/Cargill process to make lactic acid to make the biodegradable polymer PLA used in those beer cups at stadiums. Also in a lot of veggie packaging, non wovens (wipes) and also big in 3D printing.

Good luck! Iā€™m seriously thinking of going for a masters in public health at age 55. Epidemiology has long been of interest to me and this is really driving it home that some non academic approaches are needed in the field.
