COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

There’s a big difference between where I am in Europe and the likes of Spain, Italy, and the UK. This isn’t America where people are still partying and going to church.

For the most part, the Czech Republic has this under control. Hospitals haven’t been overrun. Testing is good (though there could stand to be more) and there aren’t any shortages of PPE anymore. Even with loosening of some restrictions and more infractions being written up, things still appear to be improving (though that’ll only be 100% clear in a few days or so). It’s still way too early to celebrate but it appears things are getting better.

Social distancing isn’t going to be loosened for quite a while. Mask-wearing shouldn’t be loosened more than it has been. Police are still giving out fines for people breaking the law. People here have been good about obeying these new laws.

Did you miss where they offer a second helping of pasta for only $5 more? At least they had tons of deals like that pre-covid.

Reno update - had to gas the car up for tomorrows Stanford drive. Picked up a case of catfood from Petco - I was (I think) the only guy in the store. Grocery store for eggs, which they had, butter ( really didn’t need it but the shelves in the area were almost empty, so grabbed it.) took a look for TP/hand sanitizer which was gone, couple of snack items and out. No lines, no wait (produce area looked full) everyone masked and wearing gloves except a couple of employees outside who took their masks off for a bit. Overall, people are staying home.

heh. It’s a high end catfood, probably useful for a chicken salad sammich.

Eh. Um used Europe as a generic for the places having a tough time. Obviously highly variable. Apologies for my ball cap wearing American shorthand.

good thing about all the different country responses will be a fuller understanding of what worked and what didn’t work.

Our late dog could detect bacterial infections. My son had a skinned knee from soccer. He would sniff it and then shake his head in disgust. He later could sniff out colds vs sinus infections and a case of strep throat. We referred to it as a dogscan.

Sid (Italian greyhound) did nothing for free. We called him the “dog father” and he ruled our house with an iron paw. Treats would have been demanded.

I wonder if there’s some kind of genetic component to this.

You’ve got places like the UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands where you’re looking at 10%+ death rate. Then you have Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria which are under 2.5%.

I’m sure there are other factors (medical care, obeying laws etc) but maybe there is a genetic element.

Yeah, USA#1 worst response, but France opening schools up in May is horrible also.

Even USA schools are closed until at least August

UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands only testing the sick in hospital - many tests - not going down on a daily basis because they don’t shy away from telling the truth of the daily stats. So, different testing regimes

Germany - testing everyone with a pulse

CR, Austria - testing a whole 400 a day now (wowzers) - will be an interesting experiment to see these countries ‘open up’

New York only state I have heard of giving up on the academic year.

Stop it CNN Chyron!!

VA made that call a couple weeks ago and I believe some other states have as well. Probably predictable which have and haven’t.

Ohio has been excellent in responding to the virus so far, but schools are only closed until May 1 as now. Of course, everyone here believes that’s going to be extended, but it hasn’t happened yet.

California schools are closed for the academic year.

Michelle Obama backs mail-in voting

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has called for states to make it easier for Americans to vote amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The presidential election is to be held on 3 November. President Donald Trump will probably be facing former Vice-President Joe Biden.

Mrs Obama is the co-chair of a non-partisan voter registration organisation, When We All Vote.

She and the group announced support of a Democratic bill that would expand access to voting-by-mail and early voting measures, as well as provide funding to help states prepare for voting during the pandemic.

“Americans should never have to choose between making their voices heard and keeping themselves and their families safe,” Mrs Obama said.

Mr Trump has pushed back against increasing voting-by-mail options. In recent days, the president has suggested that mail-in voting increases voter fraud, without offering evidence.

That is an insane thing to do. I went “solo” after 10 years of working at firms, which I felt was necessary to handle cases on my own. Going solo out of law school providing “Christian Legal Services” is the product of a warped and desperate mind.

Georgia has, shockingly.

My specific school district has also moved to a Mon-Thurs schedule and is guaranteeing students will not receive grades lower than they had third quarter. Can only improve your grades.

Our school year begins around August 1st, so it will be interesting to see if they try to get the kids back by then.

Georgia did a few weeks ago

Edit: a quick google search shows 19 states have so far.

The other 31 won’t end up opening back up; they are just waiting to make the decision.
