COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

That’s the most unfortunately visual post in UP history me thinks. And heck yeah - Charmin ultra strong mega rolls are the goat for me. Usually get like a 30 pack. Takes up half the under sink space :astonished:

I could go on about poo and wiping specifics for much longer if anyone’s interrsted.

Mine always seems to go in a cycle from little dry rabbit turds to soft serve ice cream to everything in between. The one constant is it never stays the same for more than a few days. Also the color can change pretty dramatically.

Is everyone else not like that?

I think all of your points are correct, but we should also add in the evangelical religious aspect. Although other countries have religious people, American evangelicals are maybe unique in their anti intellectualism and willingness to just put things into gods hands then offer thoughts and prayers. The marriage of the evangelical movement with capitalist principles is a very American phenomenon as well from what I have seen.

I saw this a few days ago. A good summary of some of the reasons this has hit the African American community hard - combination of some bad rumors, not trusting the govt (for good historical reason obviously), bad messaging, and demographic factors like high rates of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Kinda reminds me of this skit where one of the things Trump fans and black people have in common is complete mistrust of the elites:

Instant classic.

Wiping multiple times with same square guy AMA

Yeah who’s laughing now though?

The same cat that was always laughing

You are such a terrible poster. Just absolutely worthless. Why do I even click to view your posts? Maybe try to add some value once in a while.

Value per SQUARE inch? It’s hard to compete.

Not looking this time!

Changing tack for a second - I’ve read multiple studies now to the effect that the big difference in contagiousness between C19 and SARS - is the virus multiplying and shedding so much in the throat before symptoms even kick in, if they kick in.

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/science/when-i-look-at-the-viral-loads-we-find-in-elderly-people-it-is-mind-boggling-1.4224985

“We detected Sars-CoV-2 in enormous amounts in the upper respiratory tract,” said Prof Clemens Wendtner, who led the research in Germany – 1,000 times more than for Sars. “This was shocking news.” He is head of infectious diseases at a teaching hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich.

All nine patients showed a high rate of viral replication and shedding in their throat during their first week of infection. The virus does not need to travel to the lungs to replicate, and is abundant in the throat, making it easy to pass on. “It can be spread easily by sneezing or coughing,” said Prof Wendtner.

His hospital now has 190 Covid-19 patients and “there is no difference between the young and elderly” in viral load. There are three times more Covid-19 viruses on patient swabs compared to viruses such as influenza or RSV.

Covid-19, said Prof Wendtner, “can be transmitted by elderly people in care home”. He advises “face and mouth protection for the entire population, regardless of age”, which is being considered in Germany.

“The viral loads that people encounter when someone coughs in their general direction,” are so high, said Prof Van Ranst, that it makes transmission likely to happen. “Compared to other respiratory viruses, this is remarkable,” he added. It also meant it was easier for those with even mild symptoms to contaminate surfaces.

The Nature paper confirms that “for the milder form of the disease, it doesn’t go as far as the lungs, but stays in the throat”, said immunologist Prof Luke O’Neill of Trinity College Dublin.

“It means it is very transmissible just by talking. You don’t need to cough,” he said. Also, people without symptoms, “are very infectious,” he added.

“Sars never infected the throat. Went straight to the lungs. So a that’s big difference,” he explained.

Cell culture

“For Sars-1,” said Prof Wendtner, “it was very difficult to put these viruses into cell culture. It is quite easy for Sars-CoV-2, due to the fact that we had high viral loads.”

Some patients in Munich did not have fevers, yet some were super-spreaders. “It is not easy to identify Covid-19 patients,” he warned.

So now what I want is studies on potential prophylactics (like for example zinc lozenges) to see if any inhibit that intense multiplication or shedding in the throat. It seems to me like SOMETHING should slow it down. Then we all just run around with those in our mouths all the time (after the initial supply shortage).

A virologist’s take on Zinc and COVID-19

The email was one that James A. Robb sent to friends and family. He is University of Colorado School of Medicine MD, a pathologist, and molecular virologist who, while at the University of California, San Diego in the 1970s, did pioneering work in understanding coronaviruses. He wrote:

For all updates and to read more articles about the new coronavirus, please visit uchealth.org/covid19

Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY “cold-like” symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

Snopes.com, a website dedicated to debunking (or confirming) internet myths, investigated after his words were twisted by others and reposted with exaggerated claims such as zinc being a “silver bullet” against coronavirus. In an email to Snopes, Robb confirmed that he’d written the above and added, “In my experience as a virologist and pathologist, zinc will inhibit the replication of many viruses, including coronaviruses. I expect COVID-19 will be inhibited similarly, but I have no direct experimental support for this claim. I must add, however, that using zinc lozenges as directed by the manufacturer is no guarantee against being infected by the virus, even if it inhibits the viral replication in the nasopharynx.”

In short, if coronavirus is like an SUV, zinc lozenges may well be something like an oil change, though we’ll need many more miles to really know for sure.

I mean maybe? Can’t hurt right as long as you don’t OD?

Imagine if a country was creating and/or acquiring legitimate tests in large volumes so local jurisdictions could have a fighting chance.

Towns should not need to be soliciting rando Chinese companies trying to get testing. This bat shit insane. It is also concrete proof we will not see ourselves through this any time soon. We are actually falling further and further behind on testing because the demand keeps growing and the amount of testing needed for a working economy is insanely high.

I feel bad for the people there as they were trying to be proactive in light of a state and federal government doing nothing to help them.

Metal fatigue tho

Instacart is adding a “Fast & Flexible” option that matches customers with shoppers more quickly, and it’s rolling out an “Order Ahead” tool that lets you set when you’d like to receive longer-term dropoffs.

Benches have been taped off exactly like that for weeks, to stop groups from sitting (and drinking/smoking).

Isn’t USA#1 doing this?

Not sure. Haven’t seen it or forgot if I did.
