Yeah I used to tip the suggested 5% and round up, and I had only used Instacart once - coincidentally when I was very sick a year ago and legit couldn’t bring myself to go out. I felt super guilty/weird about it, it felt like having a butler or something, and I didn’t like it.
So now I doubled it and spent a lot of time thinking about whether it’s enough, feels like it is. Ultimately if I go by how much it would take to get me to go to a store, there’s no number, but if I was used to making like $10-12 an hour on there with shitty tippers as a healthy young person with minimal risks and now I could make $40+ that seems like it would be good.
That does suck. I don’t know a solution to the tip thing though as the quality of shoppers vary greatly. Many are excellent and try to help me find replacement stuff. Others run through the store and clearly run past stuff in stock and don’t get it. I had one shopper skip half my items in normal times and not acquire or ask about a single replacement.
Someone like that should have had their tip massively reduced, although I didn’t.
Another issue is if you tip a percentage, it is pretty easy to have your total to be less than when you ordered due to out of stocks. Right now that has to be very common. I have had my total be significantly less. Again, I didn’t adjust the tip, but definitely cases where I should have.
One thing I will say is a couple of times I had items not show up that I paid for and instacart has given me a refund really quickly.
I don’t doubt people are scamming shoppers with tip swaps, but I also don’t doubt some of the shoppers complaining deserved to have their tip reduced under normal circumstances. Under current circumstances, no, it is a dick move because the service shoppers are providing right now is much bigger than it normally is.
I hope nobody else in that court room died or even got real sick. If it was just that dumb judge I am okay with it. Otherwise it is a tragedy and travesty.
We’ve just had an update from Downing Street on the health of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
A spokesman said: “The prime minister has been able to do short walks, between periods of rest, as part of the care he is receiving to aid his recovery.
“He has spoken to his doctors and thanks the whole clinical team for the incredible care he has received.
“His thoughts are with those affected by this terrible disease.”
Boris Johnson left intensive care on Thursday but remains in hospital, having been admitted on Sunday.
He’d rather all Americans die than he give up his “rights” (so not happy that we are quarantining to save lives) so he’s pretty salty; mostly because his brother didn’t come to his birthday gala yesterday due to the quarantine
I have thrown extra cash at a shopper before. In fact a couple times I have had a low tip in app which means the sharks ignored it, and then gave a big cash tip for the person who saw the potential payout and did it anyways.
Try to help people out who are not just cherry picking orders.
Pretty much. Below are a couple slides from some UW School of Public Health modelers (a different group from IHME, for the IHME haters). They pretty clearly show that when restrictions are lifted, infections resume their upward climb.
It seems to me that this is realistic unless/until we have “herd immunity” or a vaccine.
I think it’s worth noting that even in the best case scenario, the number of infections is significant. Exponential growth means that even starting from a relatively small number, in time there will be a hell of a lot more.

Can someone link me to some of the antibody studies that show in relatively unaffected areas people don’t have antibodies. Having trouble finding them via google.
Don’t get beaten down by people raising eyebrows at your tipping when they are perfectly fine with the grocery store employee making 25% of what you are paying the instacart shopper.
I haven’t seen anyone regale us with tales of pressing twenty dollar bills into the gloved hands of all the grocery workers when they go to the store.
It’s hard to be too judgmental about an individual’s tipping in this case without knowing a lot more. I suspect that there is a population who is getting grocery delivery because they want to socially isolate themselves, but they’re also dealing with loss of income, so it is a huge expense for them.
It’s seems like there is this unwritten assumption that everyone who is stiffing on tips is rich enough that they shouldn’t be. I’m sure that’s not always the case, even if it is true most of the time.
