Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The deplorable ownership there would quickly move to a policy of deleting all threads with no posts for a year or something.

One unexpected side-effect of all this is that it’s reminded me just how fucking interesting viruses are. Can anyone recommend a good not-too-dumbed-down popular science book about viruses/virology?

Not sure this is exactly what you’re looking for, but my wife is a microbiologist and loves The Hot Zone - nonfiction book about the Ebola crisis.

I guess today was the day reality hit for my neck of the woods. My grocery store is mad max levels. Lines out the door. Sold out of just everything, milk, eggs, bread, peanut butter, jelly, potatoes, carrots, everything in the frozen aisle. And it is a large 24-7 supermarket

It seems clear to me that they are going to do everything in their power to suppress the deaths an make sure they don’t get attributed to the virus. Straight up tin pot dictator shit.

If you go to the website for the This Podcast Will Kill you podcast, they have a list of recommended books for every episode. I’ve got one of their books on SARS in my to-read list.

That’s been near the top of all my googling, I’ll give it a shot so. Cheers.

My homey Jalfrezi, I know you all Keep Calm And Pop Out To The Shops For Some Fresh Kale but I’m talking to Americans here who might fuck around and board themselves in and gnaw on uncooked rice.

Also, there might not be fresh kale.

It’s honestly shameful to see how little is being done in America after all this.

Nothing about orders to cancel large gatherings, closing schools, restricting businesses, nothing about testing capacity, canceling unnecessary surgeries, nothing about restricting visits at nursery homes and assisted living facilities. Just embarrassing.

Biggest grocery chain in the area is closing all their stores at midnight to restock and opening at 6 am.

If I haven’t bought anything I should probably be going at 6 right?

Most of that stuff is handled at the state level, and it’s happening.

Several states are doing those things at a State level, but yea leadership from the federal government is an embarrassment.

States are doing it because the federal government dropped the ball.

A friend of mine was officially ordered under house arrest for two weeks because he was in contact with a co-worker who tested positive. My friend tested negative but still has to stay at home under threat of a 5000 Euro penalty. His employer expects him to WFH.

Apparently, the Poway police department were called in today to start escorting people in and out of Costco, and to manage the traffic and line out into the parking lot. (like, there was a line winding thru the lot to get a cart and go inside).

checkout wait was over an hour.

Husband’s coworker went and took pics. I’ll post if I can get them.

I don’t think this is fair. Are they suppose to abandon family, who might be alone and scared? What if you only had one person in the world. They shouldn’t visit you?

Did our grocery run in Palo Alto after treatment today - as expected no TP or hand sanitizer, and rice was in short supply - high asian demographics - I noted there were plentiful Rice-a-roni type boxes that I’d suspect wouldn’t consider to be actual food. Otherwise, no shortages of anything that I could see - but the supermarket was VERY busy. We also hit total wine which was empty, but the Costco next door looked beyond awful

And to the Barnes and Noble checker who had a nose like a fucking faucet and was still working the register - I’ll hope for a painful, thrombosed hemorroid as a parting gift

Realized I don’t have a thermometer. Unsurprisingly no stores have any in stock.
