I think there is an argument for unadulterated fresh ripe summer tomatoes. I wouldn’t even use the bread, just slices of tomato plus seasoning and a slight drizzle of the best olive oil you’ve got. Heaven.

I go open faced on sourdough and add a slice of buff mozz, of course with the drizzle of herbed EVOO.

Bacon adds an essential crispy/hot contrast to the tomato. Lettuce is a key player too, people overlook the crispiness was it brings to the table.

The BLT is also elite, but the simplicity of just the tomato sandwich reigns supreme.

Unpossible. It’s basic math. Taking bacon away from an elite sandwich can’t make it better.
