It was really the worst of both worlds for Kamala. She wasnāt really the incumbent in that she wasnāt the same dude running the show who we all liked well enough to elect once, but she was enough of one that Republicans could attack her on being complicit in whatever Biden policies they saw as failures (and in the end Iām sure many voters felt that way too).

I am not sure incumbency is a real benefit anymore in America. The US is plagued with a delusion about their rightful place in the world and voters expect that their lives are supposed to just keep getting better and better because America Is The Greatest Country In The World. But climate change and demography are going to make live get worse and worse for Americans as their economy crumples under the pressures of climate change and an increasing old age dependency ratio. Every President is going to be blamed for their failure to live up to the average Americanās delusional expectation about how easy and successful their lives should be.

Maybe, but these last three cycles are weird because Trump. Heās a fucking unicorn so itās hard to know what effects are unique to him and what effects are due to real changes in the game.

Unless of course itās a Republican governor who does nothing special but brands himself as āCleaning Up Californiaā, and then brags that he did it, even though nothing much changed outside a few photo ops of him powerwashing sidewalks in SF. That guy is going places.

Yeah, I donāt think applying race to it is the right answer. But it does appear men, or just people in general, may have some mental hangups about voting for a woman, and you know thatās NEVER showing up in any exit polls or cross tabs. But thereās a whole lot of āI donāt know I just canāt quite put my finger on it but I donāt like herā shit going around.
