Convicted felon Donald J. Trump thread XXX: President Elect

Yeah you know if Rick Scott is doing damage control this hard, they’re worried.

I think this matters. This isn’t the effective type of racism that republicans usually trot out. It’s overt and specific and ugly and hits at people’s pride.

Maybe I’m a sweet summer child but I actually think this could be a big deal. Especially if Trump handles it poorly, which is likely.

I could definitely see turnout going way up for the Puerto Rican community. And I could see it dampening turnout for Trump.

To be fair I think Rick Scott’s brand of evil is more in the camp of “I’m literally criminally rich – fuck the poor” rather than “Brown people bad” but yeah, that’s a really bad look a week before the election.

That may be true when Rs have months to turn whatever new racist thing Trump said into “locker room talk” and people to memory hole it. But when your whole game is to siphon off some latino and black men who might normally vote Harris, an attack this ugly, this close to the election, could make a dent.

Especially since those are the kind of voters who vote late, and may or may not be motivated to vote. IE - a latino or black man, not in love with Trump, but not enthusiastic about Harris because the R smear campaign is working. Might vote Harris, but might just skip the line and stay home. This rally could in theory undo some of that demotivation.

Or the same person who was going to vote Trump, but not nuts about it. Maybe they stay home.

Yeah there’s a big difference between turning anti-immigrant and being okay with a rich white man calling your homeland and island of floating garbage.

I’ve only met a handful of people who called the place they grew up a shithole. The two I remember were from Rochester, NY and Giel, Belgium.

Everyone else, even Haitians, are universally proud of their country and culture, even if they admit it has big problems.

I moved away from Kansas City because it’s boring and the weather sucks ass 4-6 months out of the year, depending on the year. But I still love the town and will defend it.

AOC talked about the comments on her Twitch stream today and I thought she did a really good job of calling out the racism, but not JUST calling out racism. She talked about how Trumps response to the hurricane in Puerto Rico was ineffective. She talked about Vieques. She talked about how a lot of laissez-faire, deregulatory stuff gets tried in Puerto Rico first. She then pointed out that all of those bad policies are made easier by the dehumanizing rhetoric and mindset demonstrated by the joke. I thought it was a really effective way of moving beyond a simple, “yo, is this racist?” dialogue.

What a wonderful human being. Definitely someone to invite to your rally. A bunch more in the thread.

I was told that everyone has already made up their minds about Trump and this won’t change anything.

It’s still a turnout battle.

I’m inclined to think this matters a bit too. Like, “Puerto Rico is a big floating island of garbage”, what is even the joke there? It’s not like it’s off color or in poor taste or whatever, it’s just straightforwardly contemptuous. The joke, such as it is, is that everyone secretly thinks it’s a trash heap but you’re not supposed to say so.

It’s also a very short simple soundbite that will pierce through to the normies at a time when they’re engaged in the election. You don’t have to explain why it’s offensive to anyone.

I saw one Tweet that referenced the fact that Puerto Rico actually does have a landfill crisis, and that that was the basis of the joke.

This guy is giving off John Wayne Gacy vibes

I’ve met hundreds of Puerto Ricans living in Florida, hundreds, I’ve never heard a single one of them have a bad word to say about PR. I guarantee this has an affect on them.

LOL at that poor excuse. I’m sure somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.0001% of the audience knew this.

I hope it does have an impact, and I know most people don’t pay much attention to politics etc but goddamn, this taught us nothing about what racist pieces of shit Trump and his gang are.
