It bothers me the way that Lanning is taking flack for going for the two TDs on fourth down.
The Ducks got three consecutive stops on defense in the 3rd and 4th quarter. How likely was that based on how things were going? That the Ducks would need every point they could get was looking probable.
It was the final two drives on offense that screwed them. Either play it safe, run the clock down (had they done so they couldâve punted from midfield with 1:30 left) or play aggressive against a tired defense, ignore the clock and assume you need another score. He tried to do a combination of that and it ended up worst case scenario.
Throwing the ball inbounds for a two yard gain on the first play of the final drive was as stupid as it gets (thatâs largely on Nix). If he throws the ball into the ground the Ducks have another 20 seconds.
