They still got 3 and 4 teams in this year under this system. But there is no world where it made sense for Oregon to have to play Ohio State in round 2. And in no world does it make sense when every team that got a bye is an underdog their first game.
the alternative is to just get rid of conference championship games all together. which may be closer to happening than not based on what schools end up screwed for playing in their conference championship and then getting left out of the tourney. but that kind of ruins the whole point of college football imo.
as long as we have conference championships, you should win your conference or you should shut up and take your away game.

mainly due to the huge disparity between the top 4-5 teams and everyone else. In any given year there are normally around 4-6 playoff worthy teams (meaning teams who are not drawing dead to win it all) and hardly ever more than that. the best solution as has already been stated is giving the ACC/B12/Mountain West champion a home game in rd 1 so they are only TD underdogs instead of double digit underdogs
They only got two of those teams by raiding other conferences. They created this problem. Can we fix it by undoing realignment? No, we have to accept their preferred solution.

ASU would have been > 14 point dogs to Oh st and still like 15-1 to title even if they beat texas. CFB is the hardest sport for cinderellas to happen
