College Basketball 2024-25 Season Thread

Many people are saying Coach Calipari to Arkansas… seems like no reputable sources have confirmed yet. Would be an interesting move.

Matt Norlander is reporting on it. Gonna get bought out by Tyson Foods?

Well this completely caught me off guard

Yeah you can’t come back after talking to Arkansas. Honestly for the best. I guess Cal saw how toxic things were after he said he was coming back. Going to be a complete rebuild for the next coach, but can work in the portal era.

In this new era, this is going to be interesting to see play out. There will be ripples across schools both in terms of this power vacuum into UK and all the players from all the programs that will have coaching changes.

Good for Cal. Couldn’t let the 'ship be the only story for a whole 24 hours!

My face since hearing Arkansas hired Cal:

Nuts that the women’s season just ended and the WNBA draft is in a week. Preseason games are in less than a month. The players barely have time to say goodbye to their teammates.

How does that work exactly? Are drafted players expected to report before school is out?

I think? Maybe? I saw a clip of a Cameron Brink interview and she said she’s already quit school.

EDIT: Now that I’ve looked up a few links, I’m not sure if she has left school or just said she’s not returning for another season.

I actually don’t hate it on the X’s and O’s side. If he had been the coach this past season they make the FF and maybe ship. Question will be if he can consistently acquire top talent, whatever that means these days. BYU finished 18th in Kenpom this year so gotta think he can do better just with the UK brand. Of course it also has potential to be a gigantic disaster.

I did get the dude’s signature at a women’s volleyball game when I was 10 years old. Hoping for the best and will root him on obviously. I always thought he would be the last last option. I thought UK would at least wait until the Bulls playin game to go hard on Donovan.

Zags joining the PAC-12.

Virginia head coach Tony Bennett is retiring, effective immediately.

Well, you can say this for Tony: he’s a remarkably good-looking man.

Glad he got a title, and I appreciate his brief but brilliant run as WSU’s coach back in the 00s.

Watch Bennett’s press conference. In a nutshell, he doesn’t feel he is “equipped” to coach in the new college sports environment and didn’t think it was fair to the school and players to keep going when someone else is better suited to lead.

Got choked up several times - one of the most interesting ones was when he talked about realizing he couldn’t do it. He really wanted to keep coaching.

Criticized the new NIL/transfer system, saying things need to be fixed. Was particularly concerned with Olympic sports and the mental health of the athletes.

Didn’t decide about retirement until fall break, when he and his wife took a vacation and he had time to decompress. Considered it right after last season, but immediately got involved in recruiting and put it aside. Said he was really excited about the transfers and freshmen they got and further excited once they all got together and practiced (they made changes on offense to get more up-tempo), so he thought he was going to keep coaching, at least through this season.

But when he had a break to think, he realized he couldn’t do it anymore.

Said he’ll still be around and would like to still be able to help the school and program in any way they will let him, but while obviously not stepping on any toes. Ron Sanchez, his top assistant, is going to be the head coach.
