FSU has a pretty complex defensive system as well and first year players tend to struggle there. They’ve also fallen off a cliff in terms of results recently which probably speaks to the difficulty of getting guys to stick around and buy into a system like that in the NIL era. Props to Bennett for not selfishly sticking around though (like Leonard Hamilton is).
I always got the impression that Tony Bennett was one of the better human beings of those involved with major college basketball.
As much fun as I had watching them get destroyed by UMBC, I am glad he was able to win a national title game in his career.
I don’t have much sympathy for someone who either is burned-out and/or may have other mental health struggles blaming his retirement on changes to the system that overwhelmingly help just the players.
Be thankful you were a coach when the gettin was good on the plantation.
He said he was happy the players were getting paid. He just didn’t think the system as currently constructed is good for college sports, which I think many, if not most, people agree with.
It’s not like he went on an angry rant. The opinion he expressed was just a small part of his press conference.
If they hadn’t lost to UMBC I’d have been a bit salty about their ship. Tech at full strength was clearly the better team, imo.
But them losing to UMBC was such good entertainment, that I’m gonna let that slide.
It’s lip service. If he was offered a red button to change it back to the old way he’d mash it. There was plenty of time for people to do something–anything–about exploiting free labor from (mostly black) athletes and, yeah, these dudes kept cashing the checks for $3M.
It looks like they did do something. This solution seems better for the most exploited players than anything else they could have done.
I could easily be wrong. I don’t really follow college sports that much.
Right but Bennett is complaining about how it was done. In other words, “I wouldn’t have done it that way.” But he didn’t actually do anything, you see.

I think it really depends on how you define that.
It seems good for the people who play college sports. I don’t really care if it is good for the people who watch or coach college sports.

Yeah, that’s lol.
But at the same time I’m glad he didn’t because it sounds like whatever he had in mind would have been worse.
A chain of telephone told me he was sleeping with a student. Not sure I believe it but I’m not surprised other rumors are being started
