If by “bonkers” you mean well-officiated, then OK.
Yah. the amount of time they took off the clock when the great white hype bounced the ball off the defenders leg (which itself was a good play) after the pick was totally legit. sure
Are you saying too much time was run off, or too little? I thought the clock went from 1.1 to 0.8, which struck me as a suspiciously low amount of time for the ball to hit a player, bounce off, hit in-bounds, and then bounce out of bounds.
I think it went from 1.1 to .3 which didn’t align with the replay as I remember it. The commentary was questioning it too
Initially yes, but they reviewed it and changed it to 0.8.
So how much did you lose betting on UConn?
swing and a miss, sweetie. stay classy tho
It wasn’t a foul, that’s a bad angle and a gif so it is skipping frames. She was set and not leaning very much.
I slowed the CC inbounds off the back play and it was between 0.8 and 0.9 seconds. Seems like an odd thing to complain about given there was 1.1 seconds and that play should’ve eaten about the whole clock. As is, they actually restored the clock to 0.8 so it was Iowa that got screwed, not the other way around.
As for the screen controversy, it sucks that such a big moment is decided by a moving screen, but I think it’s correct. The screener was moving too much and even flailed her knee and elbow/shoulder out to make herself even bigger. If UConn hits the game winning shot b/c the shooter is wide open off that screen then I think you’d have way more controversy.
Quality sucks, but basically in the first frame the screener is establishing her position for the screen:
Look how far inside the 3pt line her left foot is planted.
As the defender approaches, she takes a huge slide to her left, and makes the knee bigger as well as shoulder/elbow pushing out.
She’s moved her position a ton and the knee is also quite dirty and could potentially injure the Iowa player with that knee on knee contact.
Seems like a no brainer call.
Maybe I just watch too much NBA but there are no less than 200 of those exact screens in every single game and if they called that foul every time there would not be any players left in the game by halftime and if you slow it down frame by frame it is always going to look like a foul because no screener ever stays perfectly still.
I had this wrong. No one else has brought it up.
the pick would seem to fall into the category of “you can’t make that call there” sort of thing
It’s harder to see what you’re talking about when describing the left leg, because you can’t easily see her foot in the first frame. Go by the right leg and it’s very obvious she’s moved a lot by comparing her right foot to the free throw line.
Here’s another angle. Not perfect because the foul happens on the very right edge of the frame, but Edwards very clearly scoots over for the bodycheck.
I’m biased but this is where I think I’ve landed on the call. Edwards has set screens like that all year, including earlier in the game. But like Paige said after there’s not one single play that wins a game. In the end the girls overachieved this year considering all their injuries. Tough to win a game against a team with the best player in the country when you only have 6 people in your rotation.
Yah, I guess it’s possible similar screens happen quite often in the NBA or possibly even Iowa’s team during this game, but I’d be surprised if it was this blatant. She makes her slide very late, once the Iowa defending player is practically on top of her. On top of that, she juts out her left knee. I think this type of late move with the knee on knee action would lead to a rash of knee injuries if it were allowed to be this blatant.
Worth calling out Women’s National Championship is happening right now and Caitlin Clark has 18 points after the first quarter. Iowa up 27-20 vs South Carolina
Ex texted to say she’s watching. Probability she would watch any sports thing when we were together was infinitesimal.
No surprise, this whole year has been a phenomena.

Gonna be epic if Iowa can come back and win this.
