Cobra Kai (spoilers strike first in the crane kick position)

All caught up. Didn’t like how it left off, but meh. I want more!

I like Hawk even though he’s a little prick.

There’s a little bit of Hawk in all of us. That scene where he hawks out and a hawk screams was amazing. As you can probably tell, Hawk is my favorite character.

Finished S3. While not as fresh as S1, I still enjoyed it and can’t wait for more. Johnny Lawrence makes the whole thing work.

Yeah Zabka is very very good. It’s a shame he hasnt done a ton since KK.

Just binged all 3 seasons in about a week.

Unless I missed it, no one even mentioned Stingray’s name, the GOAT character in the show. You have no idea how disappointed in all of you I am.

That’s great. Having the seasons separated made that all less meaningful. Hilarious though.

Was a shame that neither Stingray or Aisha made it back for S3

Stingray’s probably just lying in wait for the perfect opportunity to strike in season 4.

Watch party tonight is The Next Karate Kid (Netflix US) 9pm EST

Re-watching Cobra Kai from the beginning after re-watching the original Karate Kid–for the first time since I was a kid myself–makes the show that much enjoyable, noticing all the subtle references to the original that I missed the first time around.

I missed it? Argh

I rewatched the opening of Karate Kid II after TNKK and that scene is still so good. A great setup for Cobra Kai.

I always forget that Kreese was such a big part of Karate Kid III. There was some sort of scheduling conflict where he was supposed to be the big bad, but he was mostly unavailable, so they wrote in that goofy ponytail guy as the MC with Kreese playing a small part in the background.

ETA: When someone yells at Daniel “Hey they’ll be talking about that kick for years!!!” LOLOL

Do other styles even exist in the KK/CK universe? (BJJ was in a deleted scene, Kyler does amateur wrestling) (Well, Tang Soo Do was stated to be CK style officially this season and Miyagi style is basically Gojo Ryu plus a little bit of other karate styles)

Or is Cobra Kai style and Miyagi style just much better then they would be irl?

There was a scene in which someone commented that karate was lol 80s-style martial arts, so at least inferring that there are more modern styles today.

After I posted this I found someone point out in season 1 episode 1 Miguel asks Johnny if what he did in the parking lot was TKD or mma.

That stood out to me rewatching the opening of Karate Kid II. Kreese ruled these kids through fear by breaking them at a young age, but at least in the movies, I saw much more clearly the distinction in how they defeat opponents.

Miyagi isn’t very showy–partly because Pat Morita was just a dude from New Jersey putting on an accent and pretending he knew martial arts. So when he casually subdues opponents and it doesn’t look good, the audience intuitively understands that Miyagi-do is so effective that it doesn’t need to look good if you first defeat the enemy within. His inner peace and commitment to Bonsai empowers him to effortlessly defeat external enemies.

But because Kreese never defeated the enemy within, he has no power but brute force. That’s the only weapon he has to fight his inner darkness. It’s the only weapon he has to get what he wants from other people, too. So he manipulates promising children into becoming his acolytes. They could easily destroy him if they stood up to him, but he breaks them at a young age. He builds an army of kids much like a cult, ever ready to cycle out anyone who begins to question his authority.

When he comes against a real opponent (opening of TKKII), he flails as hard as those kids do against him. I don’t think they show anything like this, but this time around I was pretty sure Kreese came out of the tournament drunk off his ass. Miyagi could tell and let the guy throw his full weight into those punches. There’s no good reason an even moderately-well-trained fighter would accidentally break two windows unless he was drunk on shame and booze.

Note: have not seen s3 of CC

Watched half of the first episode with mrs rugby. We stopped after hes racist to the hispanic kid and then beats up an asian kid.

I mean, i assume he has some kind of redemption arc, but i just dont have much patience for that.

What am i missing? Many people whos judgement i trust like this show. They are however all white.
