Climate Change and the Environment

2019 hottest and driest year on record here, unsurprisingly.

Norway #1 at what? Certainly not cutting emissions…I’m embarrassed to say we’re completely awful. And that’s not counting the emissions from all the oil we’re exporting.

Aussies,

best wildlife rescue organisation to donate to?

Rexx posted that earlier, she probably knows her stuff.

I’ve been wondering how they’re going to get through the AO for a month now. Seems very reckless to put it on with such poor air quality.

I think this is the first time all season downtown Melbourne has been really smoky. For the most part the fires aren’t very close to Melbourne and usual summer wind directions should not carry it towards the city. Cancelling the tournament would be a massive overreaction and delaying matches is hard because you mess the schedule up. They probably should have tried to delay games today, though.

Yeah, how the fuck are they hosting a sporting tournament in Australia right now? I don’t give a shit if its a grand slam, you have to postpone it, especially something like tennis which is basically sucking wind for 4 consecutive hours. They’re gonna kill these athletes.

Was thinking about how (supposedly?) the majority of new cars sold in Norway are electric.

Ah right. Well, while true that’s mostly because of the gigantic economic incentives. Still a good thing of course.

I’m working on a big house that is probably costing $2M or maybe $3M to build. That’s not that rare of a thing in SoCal. It’s maybe 5k SF. I was checking out the flooring. On the first floor they have the subfloor, then a dense foam layer, then two layers of 1/2" plywood, then hardwood flooring. @zikzak can correct me if I’m wrong, but this is a lot of wood. (For soundproofing they say). They are getting solar, so that’s good, but this is not green construction. Use less stuff.

Solar hot water looks like it’s for some insane pool on the roof of a guest house or something.

I don’t think the soundproofing in the floor is really necessary. This isn’t a recording studio. Probably two old people will live here.

50 people could comfortably live on the materials going into this house. The house they knocked down to make room for this house was probably a great house.

There are various flavors of energy surveyors here. I should know more about it. It would be a fairly easy thing for me to get into that would move away from manual labor. HERS I think is a credential for people doing this.

I think there’s a lot of green stuff here, it’s just that there’s too much of it.

I don’t get it. What are they soundproofing? Is there a basement?

Yeah. Not a thing for regular houses in SoCal, but multi-million dollar houses in crowded areas (this is in Santa Monica) need to be as large as possible.

Well that is a very stupid way to do soundproofing between a basement and main floor. There are much more effective (and less wasteful) ways to do it. Tell them a contractor who has done professional soundproofing said they’re morons. You can quote me if you like.

Could it be in addition to whatever is the right way? Something I might see looking up from the basement?

Gotta hide the bodies somewhere

Double layer drywall ceiling in the basement on a suspended grid with insulation provides excellent soundproofing between floors. But it’s also pointless if there aren’t rated door assemblies between the spaces.

What’s a suspended grid? (I know what those words mean, but a gap between the joists and the drywall? Spacers?)

I’m sure all the doors will be monsters, but I don’t know if the stairway gets a door. They aren’t that far done yet.
