Climate Change and the Environment

Boomers are never giving up their monster truck SUVs. I think the environmentalists gave up even trying to talk them out of it.

The SUV’s also get meaningfully better fuel economy than they used to. They still suck compared to cars and hybrids, but they don’t get 8-12 mpg anymore.

It’s also important to remember that the last time they got less popular it was because gas prices went up by a lot. 2005-2008 gas prices were really high until the recession killed them.

I guess that’s kind of my point though. “They’re better than they used to be” shouldn’t be good enough for people who care about the world.

Of course not. The reason SUV’s crashed in popularity in 2005-2008 had nothing to do with environmentalism and everything to do with the price of gas. This is why the solution to our environmental problems isn’t making people care about the environment… it’s levying a carbon tax large enough that they do the right thing out of their own self interest.

Too harsh?

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power contract for solar with battery storage for 3.3 cents per kwh.

I don’t fly as much anymore, but you can purchase carbon offsets at places like Cool Effect. Based on how long your flight is, they calculate how much your carbon footprint is, then you buy the offset, which is then put toward projects that capture and contain carbon, or research, or tree planting, etc.

If I have to fly, it makes me feel at least a little better about it.

I always do this. It’s not much but it’s better than nothing.

It’s a lot.

Ok then I’m even greater than I thought I was!

Maybe this planet isn’t worth saving.

These protests are useless. MLK is rolling in his grave.

I have a friend in Melbourne who goes to Extinction Rebellion stuff. I don’t think he was at the disco one though.

I’m on holiday now. First I’ve heard of that site and I’ll pay our carbon dues to it now.

Was expecting it to cost a lot more than $10.27, about 2.5% of the flights’ cost.

Am I understanding this right? Why isn’t every government putting a 2.5% carbon tax onto fights?
