When I was at the Cloyne Court coop in Berkeley one time several naked wiccans (or something like that) danced wildly around a bonfire. Not exactly sexual, but close enough. Hallucinogens may have been involved. I don’t think they were confessing sins though. All in all, I’d say it was a great cause.

If you want to get an idea of the Rights’ attack on CC, follow Ryan Maue on Twitter. Dude is obviously smart as hell and knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the weather. He has a PhD in Meteorology but is a flat out climate change denialist. It’s so weird. He’s 100% deplorable, believes in science, yet denies CC.

During Hurricane Dorian, he simultaneously attacked those mocking Trump after SharpieGate while saying SharpieGate was Trump’s fault LOL. It was so fucking bizarre.

And this week he’s been attacking a girl who’s biggest crime is that she wants to save the world.

I think it’s meant to be some sort of criticism but it sounds like a pretty great party to me.

Not only is human activity taking away kids futures but is on the way to taking conkers from their present.

Although the image above was from an article about a primary school banning conkers because of nut allegy fears so maybe they’re going to disappear one day anyway - and playing in safety googles isn’t my thing either.

Always loved conkers as they are so tactile - so nice to hold.

Women Are Being Denied Cancer Treatment, Psychiatric Help At ICE Detention Center

Immigrant women being held in a Texas detention center say they are being denied proper medical care ― in some cases cancer treatment ― and have become suicidal after lengthy stays in the facility, according to interviews done this month by the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES).

The declarations, which were shared with HuffPost, detail women’s experiences at the Karnes County Residential Center, where they have been forced to stay in detention for up to four months instead of being released on parole or bond, even if they face serious physical and psychological illnesses, according to RAICES.

In case you want to listen to someone more upbeat about combating climate change, highly recommend this episode from Sean Carroll’s Mindscape podcast (the podcast is great in general). A lot of talk early about the dominance of solar. Apparently cow burps, not just farts, are a big problem.

Hurricane Lorenzo is now a Cat 5. There has not been a hurricane that strong documented in the area he resides. Closest is Hugo which was 10 degrees west.

Once it becomes a real problem, isn’t it too late?

Just scrolled up a few posts, so maybe I missed it, but am surprised there’s not more talk of what we as individuals can do. Sure, we have to stage protests and go after the big industrial polluters, but we can take some matters (and responsibility) into our own hands

For instance, I have all but stopped eating meat after becoming shocked at how crazy bad it is for the environment. One person isn’t going to make much of a difference and I’m not saying meat eaters are evil, but I’ll bet we can all at least try and reduce our consumption

What else?

I decided not to have kids. Best environmental decision you can make. But on a more serious note eating less meat and wasting/consuming less overal makes a big difference. Using public transport is another one but not as feasible for the Americans here. Sydney public transport is pretty good. I am bad in the travel department though as I fly a lot.

You can probably do a lot in your work. Any decision you can influence your company to take will probably do more to reduce emissions than anything you can do personally.

For example. What is still running in your office/place of work when the last person leaves.

I was just reflecting the other day that there isn’t the kind of anti-SUV backlash that there used to be. Seems like around the time of the second Iraq war the rise of the SUV was accompanied by much wailing and gnashing of teeth. These days it’s acceptable for approximately everyone to drive one of these tanks?

I mean, okay, a lot of “SUVs” these days are really just cars with bigger tires and lifted suspension, but that same car would get better mileage if it was still just a little hatchback or sedan.

They’re crossovers now - slightly smaller. Makes all the difference apparently.

Reading this makes me want to make my dream of an offgrid property on acreage come true, although I’d probably get killed by the bushfires.

There’s a lot you can do to keep your house from burning in a brush fire.

Yes I know. My cousin’s husband volunteers for the cfa and also pretty much every year their house is under threat but he stays and does all the stuff that reduces risk.

the Climate Change thread at the old place is a clusterfuck :upside_down_face:

Getting on for 200 posts and this gem from LB about sums it up - "We can talk about the science. We haven’t yet".
