Bump This Thread When Jimmy Carter Outlives Someone Nonterrible

I looked into it more and there are a lot of reports of 53-59, but maybe they are bad. I found some criticism that those numbers only look at players who have died and because relatively few NFL players have had the chance to live long lives (there were about 350 NFL players in 1950 and about 1700 now) that those numbers aren’t very good.

I miss that guy’s memes.

Nooo Titus Pullo died

I write runon sentences and stuff so don’t worry

I think we are kind of on the same page, in that none of us know how we’d act in different circumstances.

It’s easy for us to look back and say we’d be in the French Resistance or we’d be jailed for being abolitionists in 1850 USA. But we probably wouldn’t, and we must realize that it’s not a knowledge gap that caused everyone to continue living what they defined as “their lives.” People know things are wrong, but have preconceived beliefs of what kind of life they deserve, and don’t see why they have to sacrifice any of it.

And no matter how much one tries to logically determine where the line is for where they feel OK, in terms of the balance between living their life and living their values, it all comes down to just a feeling. You always get to a point where it’s just a feeling underneath it all. Which sucks for me because I’m so bad at identifying and then owning my feelings, while also being obsessed with trying to figure out how to live my values. So basically no matter where I draw the line, I hate it. Most of my posting on this website has been to try to provoke people into either teaching me how to be OK with it, or have them say “hmm you’re right to not be OK with it” but I don’t think either is possible, and it’s not anyone’s fault.

I think it would be interesting to explore this in terms of today. One thing that comes to mind is eating meat. I inherently feel that it’s wrong and try to only buy and use products that say they treat animals humanely, but the truth is, I could just stop eating/using them altogether if I was willing to make the sacrifice. Ditto for using products produced by child or slave labor. What else am I missing? I’m sure there are many other examples too that I can’t think of off the top of my head

I think today’s industry is very good at keeping the evils hidden and out of site. If you really want to know the inhumane way animals are treated or what labor was used in the making of a product, you kinda have to go out of your way to find out

Those are two great examples I also thought of when reading this thread of how we abandon our morals or accept things we aren’t necessarily comfortable with for convenience or pleasure and also we can hide behind society’s acceptance of said things or just have willful ignorance of the moral issues.

Conditioning is strong. I feel the same way about meat but as soon as I get a bit depressed or anxious it’s burger time.

I only eat meat to Own The Libs.

He was a solid b level actor but I followed him on Twitter and he had a great retired guy vibe. Just posting photos of sunsets from his backyard saying ‘it was a good day’ and stuff like that.
