Damn, that sucks. There are better board games, but Catan is absolutely the most important board game of the last 50 years.

Iām not hugely knowledgeable about the board game scene, and not saying this is wrong, but would love to hear a breakdown of why Catan is the most important game of the past 50 years.
I would have said that Trivial Pursuit was the probably the most popular and influential board game of the past 50 years.
i guess at the time and since then the game was a minor obsession with a cult following, but it probably did bring a lot of people into board games in general and started off what is now a big industry.
Before Catan, if you said that you liked board games, people thought of things like Clue, Monopoly, Risk.
The industry has exploded since then with more strategic games that are mainstream.
It was the first German game to come to North American and become popular. It changed the perception of what a board game could be to the average consumer.

Got hooked on Dominion but not enough hardcore gamers to get into it. Most are casual and want to easy setup, easy to understand game. Dominion too deep for them.
That is a fun game!

First place was ā¬1000, second place was nothing. Sad.
