Brother to join the forum

Lol no it’s more like he fought a war to stroke
His ego and nobody is tearing down his monument or calling for it. The sad thing is you back the tearing down of confederate monuments because they’re “racist” and “symbols of racism cuz Jim Crow” but not this one. Why is that?

@Heritagenothate

See nested quote. Apologies if you already addressed these points. How does this fit into your claims about the South? Compatible? Incompatible? Just the beliefs of the people running the Confederacy at a federal and state level, but they don’t speak for the citizens who elected them? Or…?

Do you feel our “representatives” speak for you now?

Are you going to answer any of my questions…?

Every time brother says something that he thinks is semi reasonable or sophisticated he exposes himself as a fool, having internalized the conspiratorial views of people fundamentally at odds with reality. I see why he likes Trump, they both start from the assumption that other people are as bad as they are and are thus out to get them. Only Jesus and the coach of the local sports team are different. Was Jesus an American? Did he care more about Americans than people from shithole countries?

America needs to stop coddling these fools and deport them.

Why do you think it is? Serious question. What’s the most charitable account you can offer of why that is? I’d quite like to know.

It’s weird if everyone knows he’s a racist but nobody calls for the demolition of his monument huh? Why do you think that is?

I mean c’mon, buddy, have a conversation. What is your most charitable account of why people who favour demolishing Confederate monuments don’t favour demolishing the Lincoln Memorial or whatever? By ‘charitable’ I mean no lazy “they all just hate the South for no particular reason” stuff. Basically your best guess at what such a person would themselves say.

To make it fun, stipulate that they know Lincoln harboured racist notions.

You choose to take pride in an anti-American racist terror movement from the south. There were also many southern abolitionists who staunchly opposed slavery and the tyranny of a confederate constitution that took away a states right to outlaw slavery. But you choose not to tie your heritage to them . The Germans for example, celebrate their heritage and history with numerous monuments and statues to people who gave their lives speaking out against Nazi tyranny

Lincoln was the “great emancipator” no?

Didn’t Greenday literally write American Idiot about people like your brother?

I guess it would be out of character for him not to support a lost cause.

If your nuanced view turns on the extent of Lincoln’s racism, it might be less nuanced than you think.

Right. Fleshing this out a little, in popular perception, Lincoln “ended slavery”. But this is only half of what we’re after. We need your account of why a person who knows Lincoln was racist, but favours preserving his statues because he was the “Great Emancipator” might favour demolishing Confederate statues.

When they/you whomever riot and tear down his monument, we’ll be there. The south will be pleased.

It doesn’t matter how you feel regarding if the south was wrong or right. What matters is the destruction of Lincoln’s monument will raise questions as far as the portrayal of the south and people will see Lincoln for what he really was. Then it’ll further lead to questions regarding why Racists are glorified.

I actually spoke to a black student at an HBCU about this. His take was that Lincoln’s many racist statements were to pass in a racist society, and also that he was pretty self-conscious about accusations of being mixed race due to his curly hair. I haven’t done nearly enough reading to have my own opinion, but I think there is room for openmindedness here.

Racism isn’t really about personal animus. It’s about institutions of power used for the oppression of people. Any of Lincoln’s personal feelings are pretty immaterial compared to smashing slavery.

lol the south’s entire economy was built on owning blacks and exploiting their labor. Does that seem racist to you? You’re legit a fucking moron.

Shocker, we are getting into to the real reason all this fool’s colleagues thought he was a piece of shit, and seemingly told him so to his face. To the surprise of everyone ITT, turns out it has to do with defending the honor of people who literally fought a war for the right to rape and murder black people rather than his refusal to vote for Obama.
