Shopify hosts Breitbart’s e-commerce platform. And their CEO dug in his heels when it came to light.
Interesting. I’m not sure it stops Shop from being better than Amazon. One issue with both Shopify and Amazon is I can buy something directly from a brand or retailer online but Shopify or Amazon can still be processing/benefiting from the transaction even if I never see their name.
I’ve bought a few things through Etsy recently, hope that’s still a reasonably ethical thing to do.
Shopify isn’t really the same business model. When you buy something from an e-commerce site that uses Shopify you generally will have no idea that you’re on Shopify at all. At least as far as I’ve interacted with it, it’s an e-commerce site hosting platform.
You could say “servers hosting white supremacist sites are often using Linux and white supremacists are consuming hate media with Windows and Mac”.
Amazon could do all these political things just the way you want and it’s still not ok. It’s not ok for one company to rule the world and it’s getting too much like that.
Might depend on what you’re buying. Dunno what the current status is, but they used to get dragged pretty hard for undercutting small artisans’ pricing with mass-produced crap from Asian sweatshops.
The arc of the online marketplace is short and it bends toward counterfeiters, scammers, and junk resellers. Etsy has one of the worst search and navigation systems of all imo. Same for Reverb (which they also own) but not quite as bad and it’s way lower seller vig than ebay (3% vs ~13%).
I followed this as it was unfolding. The guy that big business was throwing their weight behind was openly asking them to stop, disavowed them, and blames them for his loss. Kshama Sawant seems like a lunatic to me, but her presence on the council triggers conservatives so badly that I was still rooting for her and am glad she was able to overcome such a blatant attempt at subverting the will of the people.
I bought some stuff today, and managed to stay away from Amazon. I have two problems with breaking up with Amazon: AWS and Alexa. They are both very good, and I think AWS in particular is in the “can’t get fired for going with it” club. Alexa might be replaceable with Google Home or some thing else. Maybe time to work on an open source replacement. Or break up the company, I suppose would be good too.
Today I bought some bin bags (god knows what you lot call them - probably trash diapers or something) online from the manufacturer instead of scummy Amazon, at an additional cost of £0.50. I am a hero.
“Trash bag” or “Garbage bag”
And good work!
Damn it. Amazon is the GOAT seller of books and ebooks. Fine, I’ll try somewhere else next time.
I must confess I bought something on Amazon. It’s like the third time I’ve ever bought anything since at least way back in the day when they only sold books. I’ll try not to do it again.
Back on Amazon. Gotta get Christmas gifts for the family.
That and a 30 day trial Prime membership
