Boomers, Generational Wealth, and Inequality

Yeah like a few select people in my generation who are descendants of really rich boomers.

So it’s just a small percentage of boomers who will have all the money, yet it’s the whole generation that is blamed?

Not only that is that historically it’s been a damn good use of your money, plus it’s heavily subsidized with tax breaks.

My problem is the absolutism of some the statements that have become common itf.

My old man is a boomer and dug himself out of nothing. He doesn’t know anything but working and saving for his family.

I barely know any boomers. My wife’s dad’s younger brother and one work friend I guess. There have been/are one or three boomers on this site. I don’t know if people here hate their parents, but I think most of the parents of posters here are boomers. I’m a little older than most and my parents were born during WWII.

Obviously not every single individual. But as a group, yes. They have had ~all the political power for over 3 decades at this point.

What about voting numbers?

Yes, but … if only Boomers voted then Trump would have won.

I don’t hate my parents.

Their politics do leave a little to be desired. And they aren’t even Trumpers, which puts them well on the good side of the median boomer.

If dems vote they win all the elections.

No, I mean that among the people that did vote, the majority of boomers voted Trump. That’s not true of, say, people under 30.

I’m saying part of the reason they have more representation is they vote more consistently.

Trump is besides that point but a sexy deflection.

The problem is that nuanced political messaging is bad political messaging.

I’m not trying to be boomers advocate but feel obligated to speak up on a forum where I also talk about there currently terrible politics.

I think it’s better to keep nuance and build a homestead.

Again for the trillionth time, we’re not doing political messaging here. We’re 40 people talking shit.

So what happens when the boomer generation start to die. Like is everything just going to crash when all the millennials inherit their property but can’t afford to keep it?

Gen-X will quietly slink away with all their wealth and disappear.

This is going to be very K shaped. Some people are going to find their parents were sitting on a million dollars including their real estate and insurance etc. Others are going to find their parents died in debt.

There will be a lot of social damage from boomer kids fighting over the estates of boomers. Families are going to get wrecked because wealthy boomers have a weird obsession with hiding their wealth from their kids.

Doubtful. Most of gen-x will continue to be fucked over and continue to do nothing about it and when they try to retire they’ll find nothing is left for them. Maybe all the money goes to the few lucky gen-xers.
