Look at urban bikes, the usually are three speeds but may go up or down from there. As long as you aren’t dropping the bike on the derailleur it should go a long time without needing maintenance. Urban bikes were also called Hybrid bikes for a while, they are more upright and designed for bike paths.
That’s a good amount for a good bike. Highly recommend one of Kona’s Dew lines. I own the Dew Plus and it’s served me well for commuting and rides under 30 miles:
They’re made in Bellingham, WA, so semi-local to me in Western Washington.
Here’s a single-speed bike that I considered when I was researching folding bikes. The ability to coast is what you’re looking for, right?

I just bought 2 State Single Speeds for my wife and I and I can’t recommend it enough. They are incredibly light and fun to ride. I’ve ridden 15 mile sessions on it.
Here is the exact one I bought myself.

I rode a friend’s Felt fixie on the Santa Cruz boardwalk. I couldn’t believe how damn light it was.
New bike is shipped and might be here today. In anticipation, I bought some actual bike bibs and jerseys.
You ever see how a bratwurst looks after it’s been on the grill awhile? That’s how I look wearing this stuff. Gonna be a few pounds before I wear it all, but I have the bibs on now with a pair of gym shorts on top. Going for a 30-ish mile ride today, hopefully. Been pooping my brains out all morning. Must have eaten something bad :( .
Cav was set to retire last year because no one would hire him. Fantastic that he had one more great run in him.
Yeah Cav is winning because he has the best lead out, and all the good sprinters either crashed out, or didn’t come to the tour. Got lucky that the #1 guy on his team got injured right before too. Just massive, massive luck. He hadn’t won anything in 3 years, and was a massive dog to even participate
Holy shit. New bike is awesome and fast. It’s amazing. I think my water bottles, when full, weigh more than the bike.
I can highly recommend Polygon bikes if you’re in the market.
Have you thought about Camel backs for water? I never really got comfortable getting a water bottle out of their cages. But you can freeze them if you are going to be biking when it’s hot out and have cold water longer.
Haven’t given it much thought. Mostly because I’m comfortable grabbing the water bottles.
I think a CamelBak would be uncomfortable after 20 miles?
It’s a matter of getting used to them, the narrow ones that just hold 2L of water don’t add too much heat to your back. I’ve commuted with big day-pack sized ones and done 20+ mile rides with them. I’ve done some hiking too though so I’m used to packs. Just something to think about if you run out of things to spend money on with your cycling…
Ah, thanks. Might need to change the cassette at some point. The only issue with the bike is it has an 11-28 cassette and you can run out of gears fast when climbing. Won’t be surprised if I replace it with an 11-32 or 11-34 soon.
I always had triples on the front and don’t think I ever ran out gears climbing. I was passed by bugs on longer climbs but I could still turn the peddles…
Oof. No way!
Why carry anything on your back when you can let the bike take the weight (and discomfort)…? Grabbing a bottle from a cage really ain’t that hard.
Because the tube from the water bladder kept getting snagged on other people’s bikes when I tried to put it in a saddle bag… :)
Worrying about my aerodynamics took a distant place to just losing weight in order to go faster when I was riding…
That’s a very small niche of reason for sticking something on ur back instead of on the bike.
Mebbe some people are hardcore enough racers for that but I mountain bike just fine w jamming the bottles in the 2 cages. They stick in there pretty good and it’s easy enough to pause cos I also ain’t in some pro race or whatever you meant.
Triple chainrings on the front would do it too. Not sure which way I end up, if any. I have no plans to grind up Mt st Helens any time soon…
… Though there is a dude in my cycling group that does 3 round-trips up and down at Helens in the same day. He’s nuts, though. He’s always asking people to join him but I haven’t seen anybody join yet.
